Giant Earthworm thinks this is Sparta.
« on: September 08, 2011, 03:54:53 am »

A Giant Earthworm just backed my best mechanic up to the edge of an 11 z-level chasm and pushed him in. Shit. I have the game paused -- mechanic mid-air. Where's Urist Kent when you need him. (Hint: he is Legendary +5 Superdorf.)

Looks like somebody else is gonna be the fort's best mechanic in...hmm...five seconds or so.

Also, from that height, it's gonna take your dorfs quite a while to get all that guy's pieces in a coffin. Station a squad somewhere near the impact area in case some other fun critters come along.

Screw stationing. Gonna go use this Worm for training. I doubt it'll do much to me, unless they get caught fighting near the chasm. Frequent Flyer points will be nice though.

All that's going through my head is "I knew I should've built a wall there...."

Well, earthworms are basically harmless, according to the wiki, because they don't have any limbs, no teeth, claws, etc. Might take a while to kill 'em, though, on account of them being really huge. Bleeding out will probably take a while. Hope you've got some axedorfs.

And yes. You should have. Shame on you, not taking care of your dorfs >:( .

Cage him and put him in a position as a temple icon.  Better yet, mod in [PET] and [CAN_SPEAK] and [CAN_LEARN] so you can tame it, chain it in the dining hall, and make it your new mayor.  For real, he sounds better than every other mayor I've seen.  (Except my minotaur mayor.  He was alright.)

A minotaur mayor? Now there's a story I've gotta hear...

Wut? lol Nah, my Macedworf made his 8th notable kill by destroying it's brain with his foot. Dead worm may be better than most mayors; but I like my mayor. All he ever asks for are steel swords and stone hatchcovers.

A minotaur mayor? Now there's a story I've gotta hear...
[/quote]
Fairly simple, really.  As far as simple goes, anyways.  I was running a fort in... .18, no .19 because I kept starving my damned goats -.-  So I'm at war with the elves by default, and I get a soldier in full steel plate in a danger room for a few days, and send her out to face the hordes.  This works, and she takes down every ambush every spring without so much as a scratch.

A few months later, I spot a giant cave spider in the caverns, something I've been looking for.  I set about to capture it, only to realize that he isn't taking the bait (a wooden door) so I send my soldier out.  She charges into battle, and I immediately cancel the order and activate a burrow.  She runs back towards the fort, gets webbed, and the spider bites her head.  For 3 months.  She runs around the caverns, vaguely towards the fort, while the spider chases and fails to bite through the ☼Steel Helm☼ until she finally passes out, dehydrated and starving, and pretty much says "fuck this" and tromps back to the fort, completely ignoring the 20 foot long spider attacking her.  She'd pause for webs, but the attacks were totally ignored as she trudged back, walked over the cage, and the spider caught itself.

A few months and seven starved goats later, and I've successfully started capturing forgotten beasts and titans, using the giant cave spider to arrange for pinpoint precision webbing and capturing, and harvesting the enormous monsters.  I get about a dozen by the time a minotaur shows up, and I capture it without a single web (stupid semi-megabeasts).  Since I'm very fond of minotaurs naturally, and I'm ALREADY making this collection of monsters, I [PET] it and tame it, and with a water supply and plenty of fresh food, both farmed and "donated" by the elves (modded ethics) the minotaur survives not only pleasantly, but rather lavishly, enjoying a life of guilded gold hallways and executing captured elves.

A few weeks later he's elected mayor.  And I fistpump.

Any creature that is part of your civ (ie: tame) that can speak and learn, will develop social skills over time, and naturally be elected mayor.  This happens most with tigermen bought from elves, but if you mod to tame minotaurs, ettin, giants, or any of the *-men, then they can be elected mayor.  They never make a mandate or desire a room.

And yeah, I kinda rambled a little, but that's always going to be one of my favorite forts...

So I guess everyone benefited from that one. Your dorfs got an awesome mayor, and the minotaur didn't have to live in a labyrinth anymore.

It's like a children's book...

Incidentally, I now want a dragon for a mayor. That'd be the -tits-.

Also, I didn't know minotaurs ate meat.

I'm not sure they do.  I'm too lazy to check the raws, but I had a ton of raw plants and a ton of raw meat, so he was eating something at least...  I didn't pay much attention, I was content in the knowledge "there aren't enough trees to make barrels for my endless supply of food.  This guy must eat something, for I have everything."

A few months and seven starved goats later

I must say, you do come up with a lot of (apparently) casually tossed-off lines suitable for sigs.

Well, there is still a way to safe your dwarf. Use Runesmith to teleport any useless creature to ground zero and your dorf will be safe, indeed not the creature underneath, but this is your problem. Checking the falling dorfs position with Runesmith will tell you the x- and y-axis, but you still have to figure out the right z-axis. Enoy your healthy Urist McMechanic!

Well this one was mostly accidental.  I needed a bait animal to lure the untame GCS into webbing, and my migrants kept bringing me goats!  So I chained up a goat, and it would die, and I have to reset the whole thin -.-  I eventually started using this one cavy sow that came with my first migrant wave, because they eat so slow they virtually never starve.

This is, of course, not counting the dozen goats the spider killed, because apparently GCS act different on the surface than they do underground, and my titan-catching web setup didn't work to catch FB the exact same way.

Actually, both creatures would be uninjured.
