y u no work stone fall?

So that was my little diversionary entrance for them goblins, later I made it so it wasnt an entrance at all and just led to a statue garden
That is 70 something stone fall traps
Not a single fucking one ended up even doing damage to a goblin

Meanwhile I am raging at how I always fail at calling up an effective military -- training is shitty at best and my first line guys only end up at 'competent' and with iron armor/silver war hammers they just get blendered by the goblins

This together is making me rage quite hard, I'm deciding next fort will just be sealed from the ground totally

any pointers?

Traps - Stop using stonefalls. Cages and dodge 'em traps are the most effective.
Military - Danger rooms. Also, blunt weapons aren't extremely effective until either your dwarf is skilled or you get lucky enough to get a hammer denser than silver.

1: Stonefalls suck, they have little power at all.  This is pretty much normal.
2: Use iron axes instead of silver hammers.  Hammers have a low kill rate but a high injury rate, they do a good job of subduing someone quickly, so that someone with an axe can move in and finish it.
3: Live training is best.  Capture a few goblins and toss them to your military, the killing will rank up MUCH faster than training.

Also when you catch goblins you can give your military wooden weapons to kill the goblins with. They will get more experience that way because metal weapons would kill the prisoners too fast. But you should take off the goblins' weapons first. And shields, once I lost some good soldiers in live training when a goblin bashed them with a shield.

Stonefalls are only useful if you're going to do what I did and blanket the surface with them, and sit back and watch with glee as the ambushes spend all their time dodging them, and occasionally getting brained before the REAL trap kills them

Also remember to finish that line of traps with a chained war dog.
This way you at least know that a Trap Immune creature made it in.

Stonefalls are good practice for an aspiring mechanic (especially since they must be reset so often), but really not at all lethal. Until a dwarf is stunned over one, probably. That'll be the day one draws blood.

As others have mentioned, stonefall traps were nerfed.  But they still make quick dodge-em traps.  Make a long 1-tile-wide path with deep trenches on each side, and fill the path with stonefall traps.  Heavier stones do more damage, so avoid loading your traps with rock salt.  Cobaltite is the heaviest common stone, but in one of my forts I loaded my traps with gold nuggets.

Stonesfalls are only good for distractions and getting "JOB ITEM INACCESSIBLE" spam during sieges. In my experience if your going the trap route all you need is a underground detour into your fort that's separate from your main entrance and an assload of x10 weapon traps with high quality mechanisms. A single x10 steel disc trap with a masterwork mechanism can turn most sieges into delightful *Goblin Pate Roasts* all by it's lonely.

Experience tells me your probably going to catch the siege leader right away and the other guys are just going to stand there. The better defenses you the lest likely they'll work.

I'm a fan of serrated disks, just not cleaning up after them.

Should they then be renamed to "stone-fail" traps?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

i'm assuming not, but do better quality disc traps clog up less?

I believe the quality of the mechanism matters a little, but not a lot, and that fewer discs per trap means lower chances of jamming.
