i think too much prevention can sometimes prevent fun, especially if you've played enough to know what to expect. for example, years ago, i finished half-life with only 1 crossbow bolt short of having all ammo full. some time later i said, fuck it and now i wing it and save even if i get fucked. its way more fun indeed.

atm i play DF like i played half-life - thats probably why i'm enjoying my sloppy test save more than my normal game :P

I believe the quality of the mechanism matters a little, but not a lot, and that fewer discs per trap means lower chances of jamming.
I'm sorry, but I've started to notice that EVERYTHING you say is wrong.

We don't know how mechanism quality matters with stonefall traps, namely because a trap loaded with slade will still cause minor bruising, no one uses them.  For weapon traps, it's extremely well known that the quality of the mechanism has the same effect as the skill level of a dwarf, namely determining the accuracy and the lethality.  A non quality mechanism will cause many attacks to bruise or cut, if it even hits, but a masterwork mechanism will regularly cause severs and head-lops and be extremely lethal in general.

As for jamming, it's generally accepted that 1 disk per trap is the best way to go, assuming you have the spare mechanisms.  That way, if one jams, there's 9 more that can still fire, and you can get the same slashing power over a greater distance.  If space or number of mechanisms is an issue, it's still better to go as loose and spread-out as possible, for the same reason.  And, as stated, it appears to be mostly based on the kill shot.  Hitting an artery and having the goblin bleed to death atop the weapon trap doesn't jam it, but crushing the skull is more likely to jam because that's an insta-kill.  There's also untested evidence that the type of weapon matters, with spears/menacing spikes jamming often and hammers almost never.  It seems that in general, the more "skewer on a stick" the weapon is, the more likely it is to jam.

Yeah, I'm kind of a fossil at this point. I stick around trying to get it all back and relive the glory days. Maybe I should just haunt this place and not post...

That's damn brilliant. The [TWO_HANDED:0] ensures the weapon is used in two hands right?

I hardly bother using stonefall traps, they're simple to set up but reloading is dangerous and they're not worth the effort. If I build a weapon trap it's usually with the maximum amount of discs (there's no kill like overkill, and it should make the job easier for the cooks. Any meat passing through that would be finely minced) although I'm partial to loading a trap with crossbows as well. Too bad you can't rig a weapon trap with crossbows or even a ballista to a pressure plate. That would be hilarious.

TWO_HANDED:0 is common to all ranged weapons if I'm not mistaken. I think it's what prevents them from firing when your holding something.

Actually, that makes the job harder for the butchers and the cooks won't care. Hmm, though there is a certain dwarfy charm to automating butchering at the weapon trap but it'd be hell to clean out the meat after it's processed (and spilt) like that.

By the way, it's in Toady's (Army Arc, so years away) future plans to revamp traps. They're overpowered at present and he wants stuff with proper triggers (be they pressure plates or whatever) and just generally make trap building a more involved process.

He's wanting to turn the current stock traps into the player's meta-traps - the multi-tile and multi-room horrors we all love, like drowning traps, cave-in mines, and magma geysers.  More or less.

So with around five untamed useless badgers, a couple goblins, and a giantess sitting around in wooden cage stasis, I think I need to get rid if them to atleast get some use out of the


How many z levels does it take to kill a giantess from the fall?

How many z levels does it take to kill a giantess from the fall?
a 10 z drop kills everything instantly.

Try setting up a wall to be constructed on the side you don't want them standing on and then immediately suspend it. They won't stand there usually, in some circumstances the stupidity of masons is just unavoidable.

or dump their cages through d->b->d and then k over the cages you dumped and undump them - their contents keep the dump flag.

then recycle the occupants.

another way to build a square wall without trapping dwarves:

build it all like usual except leave out one corner.  when everything is done, build the corner.  dwarves only build walls orthagonally, so they won't trap themselves this way.
