I tend to just dig out seven channels, then dig 5x5 chambers on one side of the channels, and temporarily place furniture in them. Instant housing. Then I chop down enough of one tree to make a wooden log cabin, repeat for the six others, or substitute clay for this.

For massive constructions, I just use clay. Lots and lots of clay. My migrants that aren't stone haulers, cannon fodder, or actually USEFUL spend their time gathering clay.
