When people are paid to test a game, they arent sat down with cookies, cola, unlimited toilet breaks and a piece of software.

The devs give a check list of features that need to be checked out, they have 30 minutes break and are not allowed to move for 8 hours or so - except a handful of medical minutes away from the screen, to avoid being sued - per day.

Now, why pay out cash and risk being sued because the tester has a headache, when they can get it done for free, without bring sued, and get it tested by thousands?

As for other sorts of compensation, such as mention in credits, it's a ball ache of a job to transfer all the names across, as well as a breach of data protection laws... And should people who signed up and never played, get their names transferred across to the credits in the data transfer?

Now I'm rambling.., I can't debate from my phone, it's horrible to type with.

I like to think us professional testers are above cookies and coke.

I was all about the Starbucks and chips though. EA Canada had a Starbucks right in front of the QA department near the front lobby /and one on each additional floor above/.

People do things all the time. Sometimes they're paid to do them, sometimes they aren't. Often, they have a choice.

Just because someone's making money from something, doesn't mean that everyone involved in any way should be paid.

And sometimes doing something is its own reward.

I think that about sums it up.

Honestly, if somebody tricks people into dedicating themselves to finding errors in a video game for free, they deserve to not have to pay. Every other entertainment medium has somebody who is already doing the job (Stage Managers, Editors) as part of their regular duties.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

There is something useful that developers can get from open beta testing: Metrics
