Its like a giant human  and is called Smug Giant Child no Syndromes. Just a giant baby called Smug.

Where did it come from? The surface or the caverns?

Time to teach the noobs...

There are 4 types of individual invaders, otherwise known as "Uninvited Guests".  The first, which most people are familiar with, is the Forgotten Beast.  The second is the Titan, which is almost identical but appears on the surface.  The third is the Megabeast, like the Bronze Colossus, Dragon, Hydra, etc.  The fourth is the Semi-Megabeast, like the Ettin, Giant, Minotaur, etc.  All of these are announced in their own box when they arrive, or with a FB, when they move into the viewable area.

"Smug Giant Child" sounds like the normal strange word-working in DF.  It's probably a Giant Child who's name is Smug, or something like that.  Or else you're playing with mods or something.  Without screenshots there's only so much half-assed guessing I can do.

Giants seem to die pretty easily. My fort was attacked by one and I didn't have any soldiers but my 2 miners were able to kill it without a scratch.

Picks, however, are awesome.

Picks, however, are awesome.

Picks are the best weapon in the game, in my opinion. The first ambush that I successfully repelled only used one miner and a copper pick.

Not to mention the fact that miners ( upon reaching a high level of skill ) get superdwarven stats.
