So I can't have them pumped manually, and have the power transfer between all the various screw pumps?  I don't have a river on my map...

I am building two pump stacks, I'm not sure how big the biggest one is, but there are 97 screw pumps total.

You can drain water from one cavern into a lower cavern, and install water wheels on your artificial river.

One dwarf just cant pump enough power through the stack to power the whole thing.  Your best bet is a Dwarven Water Reactor if you don't have a river.

Thanks for the ideas guys.  I was snaking through some cavern lakes, and such, so I brute forced it rather than try to figure out if I could snake power in...

I dug a reservoir at the top of the large stack (everywhere that wasn't damp), and then with the help of some immigrants, and turning on pump operating on everyone with Dwarf Therapist, I operated the first stack, then the second, and after doing that twice filled my magma chamber for the new workshops and dumping ground :)

No more schlepping crap those extra 97 levels!  Hooray!

For my next fort, I will have to plan with power in mind.

Thanks again guys :)

The key to a powered pumpstack (incidentally; kudos for actually getting enough dwarves to man a stack simultaneously) is that you only need a floor under the side that it draws liquid from.

Eg; if it's intake is from the south

With the stack in place
F             F
X             .
X             F
.              .

Where

F = Floor,
. = empty space
XX = screw pump

I have been working on a detailed pump stack construction plan and this thread prodded me into actually completing it.

Just for clarification, dwarves can manually pump multiple pumps. I had a single dwarf pump water up 3 z-levels, but it would exhaust the beardy creature rather quickly so they would trade off on pump duty every few seconds...

I don't remember the details of the dwarves who did this, but I'm assuming that endurance (and possibly strength) effect the ability to pump without growing tired. Also, the amount of time it took to move the minuscule amount of water makes this method even slower than using buckets. It is possible though.
