I've been looking at this game, and looking at it, and looking at it...

You know, it couldn't be so hard to make a sort of offline army-constructor-tester game out of it, could it? In Game Maker, for instance. This kind of game lends itself much better to tournament-style events, where teams are divided into "weight classes" by total cost, and match against each other. Sort of like Robot Wars. It'd need a massive revamp of the whole system, weighing costs of given weapons and perks, etc, but the end product could be a lot more enjoyable than this.

Actually, I've been working on one for a while in Construct (kinda since I started this thread). Don't really have the time to get it finished, and was hampered by a bunch of Construct bugs (and the fact that my laptop died after 3 weeks into it, didn't regain momentum since).

But if anyone wants to work together on a game like this, storyline, coding, game mechanics, etc.. I think it could benefit from some teamwork. Just don't make me head programmer, I'm no good in hobbyist coding :P

I'm not particularly good at anything, but I'm slightly-to-marginally good at all those things. (points at sig) One thing I never tried seriously doing is making games though, so that will require some research. In the end, this is still a glorified exercise in applied mathematical wrestling, right? No simulation, just grinding random numbers.

Honestly I think you could make an actual game someone would buy for like 5 or 10 dollars out of Mini Troopers, if you grafted the battles onto a Total War-style campaign mode.

I've got a few ideas floating around for such "games for 5 or 10 dollars", the problem is they're mostly too complex to make without a well-coordinated team of at least a few people. MiniTroopers is fine as it is because it's free and browser-based. A more serious-ish game would need music, sound effects, and way way more work.

Currently, I'm going to settle for a pure-logic project on my side, to regain some of that lost coding skill. Hopefully it won't cut into my art practice as much as other things have. Basically, I'm shooting for a top-down field with moving dots (or tiny icons, if I get around to it) and a text field output of what happens, plus a simple army constructor (maybe as a text file parser). A roguelike version of MiniTroopers, as it were. The only thing like this I've done was a zombie attack simulator (well, zombies versus marines in a populated area simulator), which was also moving dots, but in Visual Basic and roughly eight or so years ago. I still have the code for it somewhere though, so this should be fun.

Eh, it wasn't much. A white field sprinkled with dark red dots, average humans. A given number are randomly selected to be zombies, shown green. A given number are marines, shown blue. Zombies wander around, seeking any non-zombies. Normal humans wander around randomly, but when they see zombies they turned to panicked humans, running twice as fast and twice as random, slightly favoring directions away from zombies. A normal human that sees enough panicked humans panics himself. A panicked human that sees enough normal humans calms down. Marines home in on zombies, and once "in range", start "shooting", dealing some random amount of damage until the zombies are killed. Zombie corpses also cause panic. Zombies turn any non-zombies they are in contact with to zombies. Simple as that, written in VB and terribly, terribly unoptimized. It was basically a glorified cellular automata with a lot less flexibility. Was still pretty fun. Then I added the ability for humans to not just run away from zombies but flock to marines, and added a small chance that a marine would give a weapon to a civvie, turning him into a "marine" as well. In other words, it worked on a basic principle, but it was all structure arrays and endless looping through lists, which is hardly a good thing. It was inspired by some java zombie outbreak simulators I've found on the net around that time.
(searches around)
I believe this is the latest iteration of that thing. I'll post mine if/when I actually find it.

So, I started a thread playing around with the idea of making this a single player game. Let's see how it goes.

That was great. I love the epic missions, and their going to be even better now that I have a saboteur recruit. Saboteurs are seriously over-powered though.

problem is epic missions, just like rat-missions, is that the numbers of enemies keep rising

and you have a limit on how many of your recruits will help you. I have almost 90 recruits, yet only 30 of them fight for me

and I have to fight about 130 enemies. so I rarely, rarely win

I'd thought that you might've hit the 250 recruit mark by now. I never really had trouble with epic missions, it's about the quality of your recruits. I normally keep my recruits upgraded to at least level 6.

The rat missions are insane, though. My sister has 4 guys (well, more like 2, with the spies), facing 15+ rats. But for some reason, I stopped logging in for a while and only get 1 rat on all my teams.
