Who goes "Ah!" in the intro video?
« on: September 07, 2011, 08:32:26 am »

I feel like this is something the community should know. In the intro sequence (Which I stopped to watch because it really is beautiful and I love the timing of the ticking) who did the voice that goes "Agh!" at the end of the intro video (APOLOGIES TO ANYONE WHO WAS GOING TO WATCH THE VIDEO AND DID NOT KNOW HOW IT ENDED)?

Is that Toady's voice? Did he get someone else to do it? Were there "Aaaah!" Auditions?

Hehe, well I remember Toady saying, in DF talk, how he used his guitar to get the twangy-intro sound, so I always imagined he managed to make that "Ah!" himself.  Somehow.  He appears to have a lot of free time when the game compiles to gradually become skillful at all kinds of things, perhaps dwarven mining cries is one of those skills.

To be honest though, I've always wondered about the ASCII animation itself... would love to know how he went about making that.

I hear no snorting. Perhaps it's my laptop speakers.

I feel like the whole intro goes by much faster than it used to, and many things (like the main rythm and the beyond quality and the snorts) are much more compressed than they used to be.  Maybe play it with a lower (like 50) FPS cap?  not sure if that works.

Try this:

Start it in windowed mode, and while it's saying "Beyond quality", pick up the window and move it.  This will stop the video for a second.  After that, listen closely.

I remember him talking about it a while ago. IIRC, he wrote a simple ASCII painter program and then, using that, drew every frame.

no, in the 2d game lava would overflow when you first tapped into it.  the video follows the progression of mining to the right, and all the various features up until the lava.

Then what's up with the pick falling?

If it was lava the dwarf wouldn't have to stick his head in the hole to know it was there. Magma is kind of hot and tends to give itself away like that. Breaking into open space that then overflows with lava makes no sense.

Also what Oliolli said.

yeah, you're forgetting that right was down back then.  lava surged "up" once you tapped it, and there was no such thing as a warm stone warning.  the river and chasm are represented in the intro, it wouldnt make sense to skip straight to the glowing pits or to the adamantine without showing the magma river also.

anyway, has anybody successfully slowed down the video to a reasonable speed?  I tried mucking with the FPS and GFPS caps, but couldn't get it to a reasonable speed, or to how i remember it playing originally.  Someone should put in a feature request on Mantis to fix the intro FPS to 50 or something like that.

The dwarf is digging through blue rock, the pick falls down, there's a delay and then his face is burnt off with a fire that recedes in the final frame

Definatly HFS imo
