But you don't see the magma like you do the cave river and chasm.

And also in 2D you hit HFS before you hit the blue metal. (unless you were really really lucky)

P.S. And as for the speed thing I'm pretty sure that is origonal speed.  there was a few versions where the intro was slowed down by other things, but the slowing down was the bug.

Yeah, that blue stuff is microline. Why do you think the miner is trying to put it behind him and looking eagerly into the space beyond?

yeah, you're forgetting that right was down back then.  lava surged "up" once you tapped it, and there was no such thing as a warm stone warning.  the river and chasm are represented in the intro, it wouldnt make sense to skip straight to the glowing pits or to the adamantine without showing the magma river also.

There is a lot of the game not shown in the intro.

It didn't really surge "up". It depended on your luck. If you mined a square that had magma immediately behind you'd get an overflow but if you mined through a wall into an open space (as plainly happens in the movie) you'd be ok. I doubt Toady would make an intro video that is effectively highlighting a game quirk.

How does a dwarf break into a cavern, drop his pick into a very deep chasm, stick his head through, look first right and then left, and not notice a magma surge coming his way until it's too late? I agree with zombat that he is killed by HFS from ambush.

And to bring this back to the OP, I'd guess that Toady probably did the surprised sound himself. He prefers to do things himself if he can.

Wouldn't the magma ALSO be before bluemetal? And HFS? And where did they get the blue weapons earlier, then?

Perhaps we're overthinking the intro?

I believe it's the stuff that was too Fun for the game to comprehend, right after the other Fun stuff. Wiki's a friend for that one, or just play the old version if you will.
