Flying Fish!
« on: September 07, 2011, 07:57:43 am »

I embarked on a biome complete with a river leading to a waterfall. It was filled to the brim with Longnose Gar, Pike and Carp. Mostly Carp. A few weeks in and I get reports of "The Carp is Fighting".

All were filled with death or injury on impact. Carp fell from the 5-z-level high waterfall and killed themselves/vomited in the water. Now the riverbank is colored red and green. Glad my watersupply is upstream of it all.

I thought water sort of cushions a fall?

DF water can stop all fall damage if it is deep enough reletive to the fall height, but otherwise just reduces the effective fall height, reducing damage.

Water or not, damage is the same.

Only when creature falls on other creature it doesn't get any fall damage, but gets stunned for a moment.

Water has been proven to lessen an impact, effectively allowing a creature to ignore the distance they fall through the water.  As in, a fall from Z50 and hitting water at Z48 and hitting the ground at Z0, you'd take 2 levels of fall damage and ignore the 48 level fall through water.

Falling off a waterfall, the cushioning effect wouldn't be nearly as great due to the way water falls in a sort of "stagger" method, and the fish probably managed to jump off the waterfall and fall through empty space.

Thanks for the quick replies, I wasn't fast enough though.

The fish in question are now stuck on the lower half of my river refusing to leave. My biome does not freeze...Is that a bug from 'flying' off a waterfall?

EDIT: Still there for a year.

1. Build a dam upriver from the waterfall.
2. Watch fish airdrown.
3. Harvest corpses.
4. Fish for dinner.

Also, the "refusing to leave" bit may be because they're too injured to move after the whole, y'know, falling 5 z-levels down thing. Maybe. I don't know if fish give in to pain, check their wound screen.

Fish give in to pain and much more.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And while some of them are that hurt, others just have broken fins while the rest are doing fine. Health screens are all white yet they don't bother to leave anytime of the year. Looks like we'll be having Carp all year round! I'm getting seasonal waves of Carp  :D

Vomit disappears in water. I didn't know fish can vomit. And I also didn't know that vermin spawn on a corpse in water (that was the heart/brain dead fish earlier, sorry carp.). A rat spawned on its corpse and stuck there for over 2 months before disappearing, and reappearing back again. Only rats for some reason.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

P.S. Are they as deadly as before? Just need info before I send in my only brave fisherman (Dead parent Civ)

Carp are no longer deadly.
They still might attack the fisherdorf and cause him to fall into the water tho.
No more carp tearing off limbs tho.

And remember, fisherman doesn't catch carp... They catch the "vermin fish".

Rats can swim.

In fact, almost all mammals can swim.

Ground vermin teleport, water is just some another fluid for them to tele-slosh around :P
