Challenge: Magma Fountain

Inspired by Magma Land Mines.

The challenge, which should be viable (in theory) is to pressurize and weaponize magma under so much stress and pump stacking, that you can actually manage to make it thrust upwards from a flat plain.

In other words:

There can be no retaining walls - you're not filling a chamber, you're trying to generate thrust.

Use of a Super Pressure Stack may be needed.  For those unfamiliar with the idea:

*=Gear Assembly.

Utilizing this, pushing the magma into a single 1x1 hole via 4 pumps, you can achieve some incredibly powerful, space-efficient pressure machines.  Modify as needed if the situation calls for a change.  They can be stacked infinitely, allowing for some massive pressure.  Multiple Super Pressure Stacks may be put up in a Y shape of tubes, with every stack pushing into its own tube that connects to a main tube that leads to a single entrance.

If you fail to achieve a fountain but manage something impressive, then we shall simply repurpose the challenge and award you, well, dwarves don't get monetary rewards.  You do your job and you go back to hauling granite boulders like everyone else.

A quick question: do dwarven legendary pump operators pump the same amount of pressure as a powered pump system?

Yes, the pump skill has no real effect except for military "was upset to be relieved from duty" type of thing.

I was comparing pump operator to a waterwheel/windmill thing - If I assign 4 pump operators to man the pumps - would that be the same as linking one of the pumps to a windmill?

That's right.  Except the idea for my Super Pressure Stack is to have the entire thing submerged, so that it's drawing on a lot of magma to push down all at once.  But yes, pumps work at a fixed speed no matter what.  On or Off.

If you have a magma pipe, why bother draining it? Wouldn't it be easier to mine out a new pipe along side, build in your pumpstack, and then breach the natural pipe and let it fill the artificial pipe? Maybe creating a series of floodgates to let in lots of magma would take longer than draining a pipe, but that seems unlikely.

If you build it to the side, you have to wait for the magma to flow into the new tunnel before pumping.  It depends on the design, but it may not flow fast enough to keep up.   By building it in the middle, it can flow in from all around.

I assume you build some platforms, inside a large room for a few pumps, all facing inward where there's a little tunnel leading straight down and around the room to a nozzle of some kind on the surface. I guess you power the pumps with axles made out of nether-cap, so once you fill the whole room with magma the pumps will still power.

Is that the basic idea or am I doin it rong?

Power the pumps from above using gears, and you won't need any funny blue trees.

That threw me in the direction of funny blue trees and pushing stuff down and around...

so is the 'down and around' thing still true?

Down, horizontal, and up, yes.  That will pressurize magma and cause it to spout out of the opening at the end of the tunnel.

When you submerge the whole thing, the ideal solution is to leave the center of the superstack empty.  On the top-most level, you place a single gear assemble within the 4 pumps, and then you have an axle come from the ceiling towards the gear.  No magma should ever touch an axle.

The lower-ground magma landmines in Rampartroots have definitely reached at least 3 Z's of magma. I have a triple-strength pump stack fueling it.

The main difference is, if you vomit magma up super high then it isn't spreading horizontally as fast. But it looks way awesomer, so whatever.

...So, if we can pump magma super-high into the air, and we can pump water super high into the air, is it possible to create a Dwarven Stone-Fall Trap by turning both on at the same time?

Because, if so, I absolutely have to make such a device.
