Magic the Gathering: So how about that M13?
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:11:20 pm »

Magic the Gathering, as everyone probably knows, is a Trading Card Game that's been somewhat relevant for the last 20 years or so. The last MtG Thread kind of died, and so I thought I'd make a new one, give a fresh start to it so that people can talk about it.

I'll copy my post in the happy thread to start:

I'm happy about the number of cool new cards coming up in the latest MtG set, Innistrad. The theme for this set is Gothic Horror, and while I really hate the newest gimmick they have going on, DFC's (Double-faced cards), there's some amazingly cool cards that I want to bust out at the multiplayer table right now.

Here are some of what I'm talking about:

Rooftop Storm. What. "Oh hey, y'know if you don't WANT to pay that mana cost, just go ahead and don't." At least they didn't combine that with the new tribal mechanic and make those first few Zombie Tribals so you could play THEM for free too.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

What I find kind of ridiculous is a guy coming out named Skaab Ruinator:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's already being preordered for 20 dollars or more each, and people haven't even found the gamebreaking application for him yet. It's all completely speculated that he'll be a tournament staple, and thus big bucks, and so people are buy buy buying up as many as they can before a use for him is even found yet.

Interesting about this is the theme seems to outright be horror

even its name

Innistrad... which is like "Innsmouth" a lovecraftian locale.

Yeah it's almost as if this is planned and pretty well hyped.

My only sadness is that these new cards will start my group playing with black... I was almost the ONLY one who ran black (with a proliferate and Zombie deck)

Sigh... Seems that Black has gotten back its Mass Creatures, that Green used to have. I remember a game where I was waiting for this one card to come out of the deck to remove a creature that was able to block everything and take no damage, so I was massing so many Saplings. Had that enchantment that allowed forests to be saplings and saplings to be forests, and a creature or enchantment that allowed me to tap GGGGG for a sapling. Finally got the damn card, attacked with everything, I think I hit them for like 2000dmg cause my Saplings were 6/6 after a few boost enchantments.

Still, if only there were actual players in my area, there was but not anymore...
Anyone want to buy my cards??? :P

It's a really fun game Jay, but a tad expensive, and very complex. There's intro packs for beginners that include a how-to-play manual, and they're good for people just starting out. They only cost about 10-12 dollars too, bought from anywhere.

There's also Duels of the Planeswalkers, a digital version downloadable for Xbox 360, PC, and I think PS3 as well. It includes a nice tutorial, AI opponents, and a number of pre-built decks for you to try out. Also only costs about 10 dollars.

Building decks is one of the best parts of the game, by the way. There's nothing like the feeling of hunting down obscure cards that make a deck come perfectly together.

Also, everybody that likes MTG and likes DF will like Commander/EDH. It's the best multiplayer format, seriously.

So how much Standard does everyone play?

The moment that Innistrad is released, on October 1st, and Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi, and M11 rotate out of standard, my standard playable cards will drop from roughly 3 boxes, to maybe 100 cards total. I have seriously not been keeping up with the all the new releases, although I plan to change that very soon.

Good thing I only play casual free-for-all multiplayer.

Really only people with more money than sense play standard. I literally have maybe 50 legal cards for the current standard if not LESS. But I mostly like playing with apprentice anyway, buying cards sucks up too much money.

I'll just drop off the next batch of previewed cards, everything's looking really exciting:

So yeah, looks like blue/black zombies are getting more ridiculous by the second.

Holy fuck all of those are ridiculous. Especially that last one, and the red curse.

Anybody else think that Standard Mill is getting more and more viable?
