Dwarves doing jobs not selected.
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:48:00 am »

My dwarves won't listen to me!   They keep on doing jobs that they are not assigned to, like picking up crops, building a paved road (yep, and he's a bloody farmer who never had architecture selected), or dumping stuff.  This only bothers me because my farmer helped make a road, but stopped farming when we really needed the food! *sigh*

Afbee: ok, I climb out
DM: you end up climbing out the side you came in from.
Afbee: *sigh* ok, I jump over the pit.
DM: roll dex check... You made it over? ok then

In the
  • rders screen, there is an option where you can change from "All Dwarves harvest" to "Only Farmers harvest"

They never do, get used to it.  They won't change their minds no matter how loud you yell at the monitor.

Does everyone understand the difference now?

Mmm, I noticed one of my dwarves (a jeweller, I think) had picked up dabbling in masonry at some point, despite never having had masonry enabled at any point. I was quite perplexed as to how it happened, but if dwarves have been doing tasks they're not assigned to, that might explain it.

Quite possibly he has been involved in taking down a stone constructed wall/floor/ramp/stair. While masonry/carpentry are needed for construction of these, removal does not require the jobs activated but still trains them.

Actually the planter in question never had anything but Farming(field) and Health Care selected.  Even the Hauling/other default actions were unselected a few seasons ago (in the game) and left that way.
I can see the Current Standing Orders like Dwarves all harvest trumping an unselected gather food option (though I'm guessing that is not supposed to happen), but unless they have more free will to do what they are not told now I don't see why they would stray out of their designations.  THEY SHALL OBEY OR BE CONSIGNED TO A WATERY/BURNING/STEAMING GRAVE!! (depending on what I find...)

Finishing the construction of a road requires no skill, so any dwarf will do it. However, the job raises your masonry skill.

I've had dwarves who have no hauling jobs of any kind turned on just start hauling stuff to the depot. (when they should have been building me a damn windmill)

Not sure if depot hauling is supposed to override like that.

Remember that even with all task disabled, by default any dwarf will take the time to collect plants from your farms to store then in the depot. Just check you aren't in that case before crying for the bug  ;)

Here's a list of jobs I've noticed any dwarf will do, regardless of their assigned jobs :

- Harvest food (unless you have Only Farmers Harvest on)
- Tear down construction (I've even had children do this)
- Bring items to the Depot
- Fill ponds (90% positive on this one)
- Trade at the Depot (unless you set the Depot to only allow the Broker)
- Track mud and blood all over your damn fortress
- Run like alley cats from the slightest thing, like mountain goats or raccoons

I believe you can add animal chaining, sand collection, collect webs, lever pulling and dumping items in the garbage area to that list. (not 100% sure about the last one)

I always thought that the "sand collection" job is linked to the "item hauling" task, and the "collect web" job is linked to the "weaving" job...
At least it seemed to be the case on Dwarf Fortress Classic :

I can confirm this. Annoying as hell when my legendary miner stops his rampage through the gigantic hematite vein to walk to the dining room, pick up a piece of rubble off of the tables, and drop it in a pit before returning to his dark tunnels.

I can confirm the weaving job. There was a huge aboveground spiderweb above what I eventually found to be the chasm. I built a loom and my weaver immediately set off on web collection jobs. The other dwarves didn't seem to care. When a weaver migrated, he started collecting webs too.
