I think i like Girlinhat's best but i've done something very similar to Anathema's which i think is simpler

set something like this up, connect the 6 floodgates to one lever and one of the top 3 to the other (for drainage). open all floodgates, dig out a chunk (thats all your miners will be able to anyway since water will prevent them from going there anymore) and let the water flow into the gap you've dug out. suprisingly, water doesnt really flow that fast out of a river, or maybe its because when i did it, i dug out a corner tile and it was flowing diagonally into the gap instead of straight. in any case, if you're lucky you'll get both the items and the corpse. if not you'll probably get the items. if you're really unlucky they'll all get stuck and you'll get nothing. its easy, but for efficiency i'd go with girlinhat's

I'd still go the pump row.

1. no mechanisms or linking, just a bit of floor, pumps and some retaining walls.
2. no digging / destruction of terrain required, no drain needed, as the river itself is your drain.
3. only needs 4 haulers with pump operator labor applied.

after the pumps are operating, i'd build a raising bridge in the square the pumps are drawing from, for a dam/bridge. Just for extra control later on.
