Traders Come 1000lbs Overweight!!
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:02:00 am »

Yup, I finally got all my crap over to the trading booth and they are starting out as 1052 lbs over weight.

Besides trying to sell me a bunch of dead animals. And I am not going to buy one of those dead things! I would rather starve and die of thirst (which is going to happen very soon).

Yeah, traders seem to show up with a little extra weight.

Their way of making SURE you buy something?

yeah, stupid traders - I guess they are slicker than I am. I wound up buying the dead donkey (which was the heaviest) and a couple of other meats that were quickly devoured.

I think there are a few things contributing to this.  First, I found that seed bags weren't being tallied against the weight of a caravan, which is fairly minor.  Also, a unit in a cage didn't increase the weight of a cage, which has been fixed now -- when the unit dies in the cage, the weight suddenly counts for the caravan limit.  The additional problem of units being brought that end up dying has not been addressed yet.

My caravans carry a bit more weight?  This year, the dwarven merchants packed nothing but the stuff I requested ... the problem was that they could only carry 3 logs, 3 metal bars, and a bag of rock nuts!  I'm happy to pay over the odds, but forts in the current version really do need to import a LOT more than that.

The problem with your "3 log, 3 bar" caravan is the weight of logs and metal bars.  Check them out sometime.  They weigh a bloody ton.  It hurts, of course, that dwarves never bring wagons.  That'd help them out a lot (wagons carry something like 10k weight compared to a mule's ~2k or so).

Another thing that would be nice is just increasing the number of mules in the train.  I could totally dig seeing 20 mules, 20 merchants, and 20 guards strolling up to my fortress some day. =)

Yeah, in a fortress of a hundred dwarves, it'd be nice to see more than 2 mules worth of goods show up. In the previous versions, I had humans bringing cart after cart for me!

My last few caravans have been so overweight on arrival that there was no combination of their goods / my goods I could find that would leave them not overweight, and them happy with the trade. It's pretty unreasonable of them to be expecting me to fix their weight problem, and give them a profit at the same time. I just don't have stuff that's valuable enough / light enough to do that.
