Stupid embark location question - more Terrifying?

This is probably a stupid question, but...

In your experience, is this a good balance between "Terrifying No Woods" for FUN!! and "Temperate Woods" for Functional?

I have yet to do a Freezing embark, and Terrifying isn't a normal embark choice, so trying to figure out if I have enough terror is a little hard. xD

Depends on your play style, But for freezing, you might want to NOT bring cats(or dig quickly and hide them) For cats freeze easily. Other than that is up to you, the player, To try it.

Duly noted; no freezing kittehs for me.

I adapt my play style to the environment. Would YOU put the fort there, or more towards the Terrifying Mountain?

I can't really tell what I'm looking at in that photo, but I advise you to go for the terrifying. Glumprongs.

Well, the right quarter of my embark is on a Terrifying Freezing Mountain with Flux and no trees - I doubt I can find glumprong there. The left 3/4ths of the embark zone is an Untamed Freezing Temperate Freshwater Swamp, and I'm reasonably certain there's a river running across the top part.

I'm just curious if the specific embark location would be considered optimal for what it is, and if I should shift right to get more Mountain or not.

With the introductions of Rock, Glazed Earthenware, & Stoneware (& Porcelain?) booze containers, I believe the only thing wood is still required for is Beds, & you almost always have 3 logs available from deconstructing your wagon (I don't know whether or not you get them on embarks where the wagon is deconstructed on arrival).

I'd think it would also be a very rare embark where there wasn't some sort of wood in the caverns (unless you set them to be deserts in the Advanced world gen).

And finally, I don't think sleeping without beds will actually kill your dorfs, just cause bad thoughts, so if you managed to create one bed, & use it to designate a dormitory in a room made of gold with lots of masterwork or artifacts to give them happy thoughts... (NB: I haven't tried this).

terrifying isnt necessarily terrifying. sometimes you get undead with evil biomes but i think terrifying is evil+savage so you'll probably get werewolves and shit which are easy to kill and they tend to attack lone dwarves, not groups.

i think the balance will be ok if you're looking for a proper challenge but you might be disappointed, especially if you know how to prepare for it on embark. i'd suggest a few things as i tend to embark on evil/terrifying biomes but i dont wanna spoil your !!FUN!! ;)

I think the only "evil" animal in mountains is the dark gnome. They aren't a threat at all.

If you want a threat in an evil biome, you're looking for a terrifying temperate shrubland - ogres, werewolves, and harpies.

yeah but if you buy some gnomeblight, gnomes are the only thing to melt in that stuff (according to the wiki).

so you have the unique opportunity of watching little people slowly melt to death in a pool of green useless goo.

dunno if its worth it though

Yeah, terrifying mountains tend not to be very terrifying.  Every once in a while you'll luck out with skeletal giant eagles (which really are pretty much push-overs these days anyways) but mostly it's just irritating dark gnomes.

Undead aren't scary.  I felt like I'd lucked out when I got zombie elephants and zombie giant leopards on a terrifying tropical shrubland, but they were push-overs too.  Ultimately, all the undead did were warn me of ambushes and soak up some goblin arrows.

So true. However, skeletons can shit you up real bad if you aren't equipped properly. first time i embarked on a proper evil biome and it had skeletal horses. they fucking kill shit and are hard to kill too. horses in general are pretty strong and aggressive but normal ones just run away. being skeletal makes them stronger in areas they already are strong. thats when i discovered how shields with a little skill and a proper weapon can go a very long way in defending. did a lot of ‼Science‼ there. Current terrifying biome has the occasional werewolf and moose men for crying out loud... i hope the next release with necromancy and stuff also has hordes of zombies and ghosts and shit - now THAT would be fucking awesome
