Edit: Just making a quick mention that I'm revising the requirements for Officer. It's not going to be a simple case of 'buy a boat get officer' from now on but it should be simple enough. I'm mostly worried about a potential case of us having tons of sloops and officers and no one who really wants to job for another officer.

Came up with an awesome flag name while chatting Apple and Bowl up on IRC. How does Gummi Dwarves sound to everyone?

I'll probably be running a second poll after this with another set of names. We really didn't have time in the initial poll to come up with really interesting names beyond direct references to Bay12. We might even have a third poll if the second poll has too many spread out votes. Please submit your names!

The more I think about it, the more I think we should avoid a really obviously referential flag. It's not going to be just our crew in this flag, that's the point. We want this flag to do well, right?

Well, for that it needs a good few crews. Now if you're the captain of a crew, whether it's a small one or a big one, you've got a lot of pride in your crew and its identity. Small ones because you have big plans for your crew, hoping to take on the world, and big ones because, well, you're fairly successful. If you're looking to join up with a flag, the last thing you want is for people to write off the identity of your crew and just view you as "one of those Bay12 guys".

Basically, if we want a successful flag, it needs to have a name that other people would like and want to join up with willingly, rather than one that appeals to our dorfiness. Tragic, I know, but necessary.

Rather strong arguement you have there Bowl. The name for the flag should be something anyone can enjoy. If it's a subtle B12 reference all the better right?

On that note the only names up there that sound like they'd remotely fit your criteria would be Kraken Up and Boat Murderers.

Would love to hear some discission for/against this. Also more names please!

Basically, if we want a successful flag, it needs to have a name that other peopyle would like and want to join up with willingly, rather than one that appeals to our dorfiness. Tragic, I know, but necessary.

IMO Twelfth Bay is fine for this, I highly question anyone would think its talking about anything more than a bay. We dont have to tell everyone why its called that. And this place is known more under the "Dwarf Fortress" moniker from people outside as far as I can tell.

EDIT: Kraken Up and Boat Murderers sound really....lowbrow.

The Twelfth Bay, for the following reasons, sucks.

1. It sounds pretentious as hell. Our crew ia already our "slice " of puzzle pirates. Anyone wishing to directly represent Bay12 joins our crew. The flag is meant to be an extension of us, and allow us to do more/conquer stuff. Forcing everyone who joins the flag to identify with our crew is pointless. In fact it's almost the same as not having a flag and simply telling everyone to join us.
2.It's pretty obvious that in the world of Puzzle Pirates, puns are a thing people appreciate. Kraken Up is, quite frankly, genius, and I think it'd actually attract the sort of crew we'd want in our flag (ergo: The nice friendly ones). The Twelfth Bay sounds like some kind of actually important thing, whereas Kraken Up is far easier to relate to the rest of the game, and thus more likely to appeal to people.
3. T-H-E  T-W-E-L-F-T-H  B-A-Y is stupid.
