If you have some form of plug-in mouse, I can seiously reccommend Osu. There are several options to knock the graphics right down if need be, so you should be ok in that area.

Trackpad is suicide, though.

Opinions, opinions! I thoroughly enjoyed Daggerfall and clocked a good many hours on it.

If you've the patience to set it up, by all means, try it. Don't let us be the judge of things. Just note that it does take some getting used to and doesn't hold your hand at all, so prepare for some Fun along the way.

There is a DL of it that auto installs and sets up dos box and everything.  I think I posted the link in a past post of mine if anyone really really wants it.

If not under Neotemplar look for Vellum.

Might and Magic: The Land of Xeen.

Old school, fun, super long CRPG. It filled with jokes, references, the puzzles can still be challenging and its pretty well paced.

You can put it from gog.com for cheap, or you can take a gander for a torrent.

Watching thread as I've been in a similar situation ever since my 'nice' laptop died.
Browser-based RPGs are a godsend. Like the Kingdom of Loathing.

OMG I loved the World of Xeen. Was a two disc game with Clouds of Xeen and Darkside(?) of Xeen I think. Great party based RPG and the puzzles were indeed great. Also, at the time the writing was un-matched. While we are on great RPG's, Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday and Buck ROgers Matrix Cubed were amazing RPG's using the old SSI engine. http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/23884/Buck+Rogers+-+Countdown+to+Doomsday.html

cave story! grab it, it's free!

grab it here! it's not a rguelike, but more of a metoidvania style game, with really good gameplay and story.

I'll second this. Cave Story is the most amazing game to be in existence, and is matched by a select few games, at least in my book (games like Bastion, which is probably too CPU intensive for you).

How about emulating some games?
I suggest king's bounty for the genesis.

Or if you find it frustratingly hard, and need to cool off by playing something else, but you want to still play hard platformers, there's Tower of Heaven.

What is a good and unique roguelike game? I see TONS and so many of them are just a bunch of upstarts that are clones of this or that...

Are there any straight DnD rule set based rogue likes?

what about ones with unique features that truly set them apart?

Alright. So far:

-Tried Covert, have little clue what I am doing. Fortunately, it comes with a manual so I think I will look into it later. It also randomly crashed at one point.

-Tried Masters of Ur Quan. I love the travelling, resource harvesting, diplomacy, etc but (A) either I suck horribly at combat or it is superbly unintuitive (Beating that first enemy ship by Earth was easy peasy, but I lose to the Sylandro probes no matter what I use).

-Considered Aurora, but it looks like the learning curve is effectively a cliff. Might try it if I run out of other games and I feel like investing lots of time.

The person supporting regenerating health, when asked why you can see when shot in the eye justified it as 'you put on an eyepatch'. When asked what happens when you are then shot in the other eye, he said that you put an eyepatch on that eye. When asked how you'd be able to see, he said that your first eye would have healed by then.

seeing as how you asked about DnD games, I will keep pushing SSI games, such as Pools of Radiance and Champions of Krynn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Box
