Recommend Me A Game!
« on: September 05, 2011, 09:33:14 am »

I am currently stuck with my laptop while I search for a decent motherboard to fix my desktop with. While using this laptop, I would like to have more games to play in the meantime. I have already downloaded a fair amount, and need more suggestions. Other people can ask for recommendations here too, I suppose. Anyway, criteria:

-It can't be "disk exclusive" eg. King of Dragon Pass. My laptop has no disk drive. If it is POSSIBLE to download it and get it working without a disk, then that is worthy of suggestion, however.

-It can't be anything that requires a good video card, or a video card of any kind, really. Old games (pre 2000 is probably safe, though newer games might be fine) are good, and DOS games especially (due to their size).

-If it requires a decent framerate or is an FPS it probably won't work.

-Free games are preferable

So, without further ado, the games I have right now and want to expand from are:

-Strange Adventures in Infinite Space (A roguelike/space shooter/explorer that is generally played over the course of 15 minutes)

-Weird worlds (the sequel to the above, better graphics, new features, etc)

-Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator (A very basic DOS political simulator set in, surprise surprise, the middle east. Poli-sims are fun so long as they let you fund rebels and destabilize other countries)

*** IMPORTANT *** I recall a browser game also set in the middle east. It was by some obscure Russian company I think, and they also made a game where you run for president or...something. I am sorry that I forget the details as it was a while ago, but it was a helluva fun game. If someone knows what I am referring to, please provide a name and/or link

-Romance of the Three Kingdoms I and II (This game looks fun, but I don't have a damn clue as to how to play it seeing as how it lacks a tutorial. I think its a strategy game with RPG elements, but it would be nice to learn how to play properly. Also, the second one doesn't seem to have colour)

-Liberal Crime Squad (You should know this game. It is a roguelike strategy game; frankly, I love roguelikes so long as they have a bit of strategy beyond "run into a dungeon, kill d00ds, repeat")

When asked what happens when you are then shot in the other eye, he said that you put an eyepatch on that eye. When asked how you'd be able to see, he said that your first eye would have healed by then.

You will not find much better than Conflict: Middle East simulator. Immense replayability. I also recommend Covert Action by Sid Meier and Microprose as seen here http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/37-strategy/19925

download it from HOTUD or Abadonia. Use DOSBOX for best performance.

I can recommend Aurora (Highly detailed turn-based space 4X game), Incursion (Roguelike which is supposed to be fairly easy but I never got past level 2) , Cataclysm (zombie-apocalypse Roguelike where using shotguns and chainsaws isn't necessarily the best idea)

Don't bother with Daggerfall.  It's a hassle to get running and it's not that good.

None of the JA series is free on GoG.com, but if you do not have a GoG.com account I Strongly recommend getting one for your situation. There several free games on there that fit your required situation (Downloaded old-school games)

Specifially they have
--
Beneath a Steel Sky
Lure of the Tempress
Teen Agent
Tryian 2000
Ultima 4
Dragonsphere

all of them are free and should run without any work on windows 7, it'll say on the store page what they are most recently updated to. Probably all of them come with a packaged copy of DosBox to make it so you really only need to use the shortcut it installs to get it running just fine.

Edit: If you do make a new account I'm not sure if these will show up naturally on your account page or not, if they do not just do a search for them and click 'download' they'll appear on your account page then.

I got it for free when I made an account. Must be some kind of limited offer deal.

I recommend Incursion, it's a fun roguelike, and is based off of the D&D third edition rule-set.
But remember, don't use "Animate Dead" in a graveyard, especially not on level 3, wights will murder you.

Don't bother with Daggerfall.  It's a hassle to get running and it's not that good.
You can get an installer version that comes packaged with it's own preconfigured version of DOSBox, all the patches and some of the content mods, double click to set up.

I'd like to second all of these. Also, Bastion, which is an indie RPG with wonderful story, art, music, gameplay, et cetera. It's 15 USD on Steam, but is well worth it. By the time you read this my droolfest over it will probably be posted in the thread.

Aurora on small monitors:
1. Game Parameters -> Reduced Height Windows.
2. Lock taskbar to the right side of your desktop.
3. Run Resize Enable

RotTK is an odd hybrid of 4x and strategy. The conquest map is all about figuring out your neighbor's military strength and forming alliances with the other families for defense. The battle portions of it are more like a turn-based strategy. I haven't played 1 or 2, I started with 3 on the SNES (iirc.)

Having played it and found it ok.....I recommend King of Dragon Pass instead. Especially based on the other games you've listed.

It's like RotTK, minus the turn-based strategic combat portion. It's purely text driven but has a lot of nice (static) art that frames it. It's about forming a clan, learning the fantasy mythology of a world, worshiping your gods, making alliances with other clans to form tribes, raiding each other, going to war ect....It's a lot like RotTK in that you get a bunch of advisers which are basically your characters that you use to interact with the world. KoDP does a very good job at the political game, where you have to manage other's opinions of your tribe and where a lot of decisions have multiple consequences for the political landscape.

Bah, didn't read the whole OP.
