Day X: DF players complete quantum computer in DF!
Day X+2: Scientists invent functioning quantum computer!

When I read the thread's title I was actually expecting some huge goblin-killing magma-device which will ruin your fps.
But this is nice as well :)

Even if quantum computers existed and they were affordable, Dwarf Fortress would not necessarily run on one.

No, it probably would need two or three. :D

Dwarf Fortress: Pushing computers with infinite computing power to their limits since 2001

Okay, quantum computers don't have infinite power...

When DF 1.0 comes out, we may all have computers able to run it!

Quantum computers wont be any better than normal computers at running DF for similar reasons that multi core computers are not.

How so? It's one computing unit, is it not?

Time for me to ask a stupid question. If you had a powerful enough computer that is multi-cored / quantum based could you not emulate the architecture needed to run another piece of software like DF and get the benefits of more advanced hardware?

And wouldn't quantum computing make single cores that are vastly faster than standard single cores? So while your state of the art quad-core quCPU is, say 100 times faster than your sate of the art standard quad-core CPU, then the individual core DF would run on would be about 100 times faster on the quantum CPU than on the standard.

Of course, all numbers here are made up on the spot.
