38c Recruit gets strange mood dissapears from the milita
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:44:00 pm »

So a recruit just got a strange mood.  He wants cut gems and rock.  I have plenty of both, but he will not grab any materials.  Also he is no longer on the military list, so I cannot deactivate him to see if that fixes it.

Are you sure he just wants cut gems and rock? He might need shells or something else you don't have, as well as tons of cut gems and rock. Also, sometimes people confuse the demand for rocks with the demand for blocks - they're a bit similar. Try cutting some and see if he takes them.

Honestly though, random strange mood demands you just can't fulfill are part of the game. If you really want to know what he requires, get Dwarf Companion; you can find out exactly what he wants with it.

Gems sometimes also means raw or cut glass.

Really? no kidding.  I thought cut gems where like fish or something.  and man rocks and blocks, totally the same word I see now that I was confused...
Yeah I tried cutting gems and I have regular stone and stone blocks sitting around.  First try reading someone's whole 3 sentence post, second try to be less condescending in the future.  It's pretty safe to assume that if someone posts what is needed for a mood, then they have checked it and are not confusing 'cut gems' with 'shells' is my spelling and grammar really so bad that you thought I didn't speak fluent english?

Anyway The part that I know is 100% a bug is that this guy is gone from my military menu.  I had two squads of 6 marksdwarfs and this guy was in one of them.  now I show a squad of 5 and a squad of 6.  his name is not on the military list anywhere.  He does show up in the unit list, but I can't undraft him from there.

How many cut gems does he want?  How many rocks does he want?  Is it correct that he has grabbed 0 materials so far?  What kind of mood is it?  What workshop did he claim?  How many and what type cut gems do you have available?  Are all the gems accessible?  Is it the first strange mood that particular fort has had?  Was the dwarf one of the original 7 or is he an immigrant?  What are his preferred materials?  Has he ever been wounded in combat/sparring/accident?

No need to be obnoxious asshole to someone who tries to help you. I wouldnt even help you now because you're an ungracious dick.

Also the Mooders disappearing from the military list is the same as a noble not being on the military list, it's so you cant Draft/Undraft them, don't ask me why you cant, it wasn't my decision.

The mood and not being able to complete due to materials is not my problem, thank you everyone for your suggestions for making sure he has the mats.

My problem is I think the fact that the guy is in the military is preventing him from working, but I cannot undraft him since he is no longer on the military menu. This may be intentional to prevent people from drafting mooders to prevent construction, but in this case it is making (as far as I can tell) an impossible mood because the guy is stuck as a recruit and can't work. I may be wrong and military dwarfs can work on moods and I don't have the materials, that is completely possible.  If someone has ever had a military dwarf finish a mood please let me know

EDIT: spelling lol

They're supposed to be undrafted the moment they get the mood.

Not sure how that works with hero military dwarves.

not a hero or legendary, just a recruit, no military skills.  if they are supposed to undraft automatically, this guy didn't.

The problem is with materials. I had about 5 or 6 military dwarves making their artifacts. It's how it's supposed to be, not a bug.
Try to ask in the gameplay questions forum, maybe there someone could help you too.
Can you quote his requirements? Maybe someone will see the problem with your dwarf immideately if he sees the text.

I'm pretty sure I had a military dwarf get and complete a mood over the weekend.  They would've been a dabbling marksdwarf and on duty at the time.  I know that when the announcement came about the mood, they were referred to as a military dwarf, and that when they were done they were still in the military.  Then I removed them from the military so they could use their legendary bone carving to make bolts and helmets.

Wood
cloth
shells
rough color
smooth rock
...

if he grabbed wood and cloth but not gems and you have tons, CHECK ON THE SHELLS.

That what he meant.

Now.  No more help for you for being an ungrateful a$$hat.

I have never had a dwarf have a problem with finding 'rock' for a strange mood.  I mean never.  I have never ever had them fail to find rock.  So the fact that this guy won't even go get the rock I have says this is a bug, I may not have the gems he needs, I know that, whatever.  but he should get the mats I do have, like rock. w/e clearly no one actually wants to help, so this is getting emailed directly to toady.

he probably wants a specific type or rock that you don't have

like kaolinite or something obscure, there are tons of different kinds of rocks.

Also, make sure that the stones you have are in a stockpile.  In my experience, dwarves will not grab a material in strange mood unless that material is in the correct stockpile.

What the people in here are trying to tell you is that this sort of thing happens.  A LOT.  Just get used to it.
