I've been enjoying this LP as well - I really liked the 'taste of power' concept of starting with a few high-tech ships. Even if they wound up being a little too high-tech, heh. Still the 'crash' of running out of high tech ordnance (or, if the ships somehow got destroyed) would/should make for some great fun/drama as well.

I'd also like to chime in with my two cents on getting into the game (though I've only been playing it for about a month now); I got into it by reading the (admittedly quite limited) wiki tutorials, reading the Academy forum on the Aurora forums extensively, and then just jamming my metaphorical fingers into whatever moving parts I could find. I'd call it one part trial and error, two parts reading about other people's trials and errors, and several parts too much free time. I think the biggest barrier to entry is really the interface; once you figure out how to wrestle with that properly, the rest starts to fall into place, especially if you fall back on searching the forums for some of the harder to grasp stuff.

Reading some of the AARs (like this one!) can help as well; I just enjoyed the ones from the fiction section of the main forums since I hadn't figured out how to deal with the resolution issues at the time, but if you have a grasp on the basics I imagine those can give some pointers on ship design and order of play at the least.

President's Personal Log, 9th May, 2116

Three battalions of hostile robotic soldiers were unearthed at the dig in Glasgow. The River has been dispatched to transport our mobile infantry brigade to the location.

President's Personal Log, 19th May, 2116

The robotic soldiers have been dealt with. I have decided to leave the mobile infantry brigade in place, just in case we unearth more robotic soldiers.

President's Personal Log, 18th June, 2116

It's a good thing we left the mobile infantry in place. They just unearthed another vault of robotic soldiers. The mobile infantry are dealing with them.

President's Personal Log, 5th July, 2116

They mopped up the robot forces again. I hope this doesn't end up becoming a monthly thing.

Zoe Dodd just completed research on better grav sensor strength. He has now begun researching a set of active sensors and missile fire control systems. It will be about a year before he has them all finished. Jennifer Evans is researching some missile launchers as well, utilizing the reloading technology we salvaged from the enemy vessels.

President's Personal Log, 6th December, 2116

Our second engineer brigade just completed training. They'll be led by Steven Osullivan, the newly graduated xenoarchaeology expert (15% bonus). They should help recover the ruins on Glasgow V moon 4 faster.

President's Personal Log, 1st January, 2117

Today marks our seventeenth year here. The wealth from the scrap is beginning to run low, down to 1720. The construction of financial centers has significantly improved the economy. The last month 31.2% of our income came from our financial centers, compared to 56.6% coming from tax on populations. We have 77 financial centers completed, with 23 more coming by June of 2118. At that point production will shift to ordnance factories.

Our research projects are also going well. The long range sensor package will be ready for production in May, then the two fire control systems should only be a few months behind. We also have some launcher systems researched, and a new magazine system is in the planning stage. We should be able to begin producing missile defense PDCs in a few years, with our first warships coming soon after.

President's Personal Log, 22nd February, 2117

The engineers disturbed another vault of robotic soldiers today. The mobile infantry are cleaning them out again. This seems to be happening with disturbing frequency of late.

President's Personal Log, 10th May, 2117

I've just received word that the Intrepid 2 has spotted more wrecks in the new system of Carver. I have sent the Legion along with a salvage team to check the area. The 10th mobile infantry battalion is also accompanying them aboard the River troop transport, just in case a base is found in the area.

President's Personal Log, 17th May, 2117

The Joliette Imperium has just informed us that they consider us a friendly empire, and will allow our ships to use their jump tenders. They have also started sharing geo survey data with us. I intend to propose that begin doing the same at the next senate hearing in June.

President's Personal Log, 8th August, 2117

Zoe Dodd's team just finished researching the last of the fire control systems. We should have workable PDC plans soon, we only need a few more parts designed. Actually constructing them is another matter, since we're still building financial centers and need to work on ordnance factories next.

President's Personal Log, 28th August, 2117

Commander Jacob Gallagher was killed in an accident today. He was the CO of the Traveller, our fuel harvester - and he always performed his job excellently (60% bonus). He will be missed. The CO of the Tribal salvager will be reassigned to the Traveller as soon as arrangements can be made for the two ships to meet, since the tribal rarely salvages anything these days and our fuel production is more important.

President's Personal Log, 2nd September, 2117

I just received word that the Prospector 3 was attacked in the Horrigan system by an Aigalas class ship. The system is one of the new nebula systems we've been exploring. The Legion is still out of contact investigating Carver, but even when it returns I can't send them. They just aren't equipped to fight in a nebula, their only beam weapons are point blank range gauss point defense turrets and their main defense is their shields. For now this enemy in Horrigan will have to be left alone.

President's Personal Log, 28th October, 2117

I just received a report from Captain Iqbal on the Carver system.

"We arrived in system on the 23rd of July, activated sensors, and began moving toward the sole planet in the system. On the 24th we detected two Anaithil class enemy vessels and began closing, reaching missile range early morning on the 26th. We fired 60 size 5 Assassin missiles, 30 at each target, then waited for results. An hour later the missiles impacted, destroying one ship and damaging the other. As expected, the ships had no point defense - but the missiles only had a 75% hit rate. We fired off another 10 at the other target, destroying it as well.

We then proceeded to the planet in the system, with the troop transport River following us. We captured a base on the planet and found 190 Assassin ASMs, a net gain of 120 after taking into account the 70 fired at the ships guarding the base. We reported the two DST stations and new wreckage to the salvage team, and returned to London to send back our report."

President's Personal Log, 24th November, 2117

We've detected three ships from the Kaifeng approaching Leyland-A I again.

President's Personal Log, 4th December, 2117

The Kaifeng just nuked our tracking station in Leyland! I thought our relations were improving, but apparently I was wrong. There was no formal declaration of war, they just showed up and fired missiles.

I'm sending the Legion and Hades to investigate. So far we have never detected them in our home system, and they're the largest threat - so I feel safe enough sending our entire military force. Better that than arriving with too little and losing our best ship.

President's Personal Log, 1st January, 2118

The new year brings trouble this time. The Kaifeng have destroyed our Leyland listening post, and I am monitoring a situation in Leyland. Our military forces have detected the three ships that destroyed the post and are pursuing them now.

President's Personal Log, 5th January, 2118

The Kaifeng just destroyed a Joliette ship, so they must be at war as well. Our ships will be in range of the targets tomorrow, and I have ordered them to eliminate the Kaifeng ships. This may be the start of an interstellar war, but they were the aggressors.

President's Personal Log, 6th January, 2118

The Kaifeng ships were running, but the Legion closed in to 80m km and fired off 60 Assassin missiles, 20 at each enemy ship. One Sirtori class was destroyed, the other severely crippled. The Argonauta seems less damaged, so another volley of 10 were fired at it - destroying it. The Legion closed on the remaining crippled ship and ripped it apart with gauss fire.

President's Personal Log, 24th January, 2118

The military fleet just came across a small, 2700 ton Kaifeng ship in the Leyland system. It was likely a survey vessel, but I had them destroy it anyway using gauss weaponry. We don't want them finding Glasgow and our colonies.

Since Middlesborough is a nebula, I've ordered the fleet to blockade the Middlesborough gate and destroy any ships that come out. Perhaps they'll send in a fleet this way.

I'm sending a espionage team to Leyland on the Intrepid 2, just in case I get the chance to drop them off on a Kaifeng world.

President's Personal Log, 25th March, 2118

On the urging of Commodore Gibbs, I've decided to send the fleet through Middlesborough, even though it's a nebula system, to get to Kaifeng system. It's just over an 8 day trip, so hopefully they don't encounter enemy vessels along the way. No ships have come through, and the worry is that they could go right around without us realizing. If not for the jump gates between Sunderland and Middlesborough I might just blockade the Middlesborough-Leyland gate, but they can go right around and get into our systems so it seems taking the fight to them and destroying their means of producing warships is the best bet. Our ships seem to have a significant tech advantage, so they should be alright. Since jumpgates exist the entire way my ships can remain in contact with only a slight delay for the signal travel time between gates, and I can give the order to retreat at any time if they appear to be in danger.

I've transferred the espionage team to the Legion for later drop off on the Kaifeng homeworld.

President's Personal Log, 4th April, 2118

The fleet has made it to Kaifeng system. They destroyed a 33750 ton vessel near the gate, likely a freighter, and have continued their movement toward the Kaifeng capital.

President's Personal Log, 10th April, 2118

We've detected a Kaifeng defense fleet. On further approach, twenty two 950 ton FACs were been spotted. The Legion destroyed or disabled them with the size 5 Assassin missiles, then finished off the drifting ships with gauss as they passed them on the way to the other ships.

President's Personal Log, 16th April, 2118

What follows is a report of the last six days in Kaifeng.

At 500m km the Hades launched fighters at the 10 assorted ships on approach, ranging from 7000 to 14000 tons. Two 7000 ton Bari class ships were destroyed, as well as a 14000 ton Settembrini and another 14000 ton Oriani. A good many missiles were shot down in final defensive fire. This left 6 ships on approach. A 7000 ton Ciclope class ship got in range first, being swiftly shot down by a volley of 20 Assassin missiles from the Legion. By this time the Hades' fighters had reloaded, and were again sent on a bombing run against the remaining five ships. They destroyed another Bari class, a 14000 ton Sirtori class, and a 7000 ton Marcello class ship. This left two 14,000 ton Settembrini class ships on approach.

The Legion fired 80 missiles, followed by a second volley of 80 when those didn't destroy their targets. The second set of 80 did the job. This left the Legion with 130 Assassin ASMs, 33 size 8 high powered ASMs, and 15 of the new size 8 Wasp II ASMs. The Cerberus ships are carrying a mix of Ardent class and Assassin class size 5 missiles.

Continuing our approach to the world, we detected a group of 10 Cavour class ships, 21050 tons with a max speed of only 1424. Figuring these were probably cargo or colony ships at their speed, we ignored them for now and continued toward the world. Getting closer, we detected a variety of bases orbiting the world. We stopped at 32m km and began firing on them. Their anti-missiles shot down everything, so the Legion began approach to them to determine their close-range effectiveness and perhaps make them waste their anti-missiles.

Upon reaching 2m km, the bases began firing volleys of 100 size 1 missiles. This swarm tactic overwhelmed the Legion's gauss defense and began damaging the shields, so they began moving off and fired a few volleys of missiles at the target hoping they'd make it through since they had focused on anti-ship, but they quickly switched back and shot them down - and the legion took heavy armor damage. After recharging shields, the Legion decided to move back in. They can't have unlimited AMMs, after all.

This repeated a few times, without the armor damage due to more care taken by the Legion's pilot, but the enemy seemed to have an endless supply of anti-missiles. Deciding a massed attack to be the only way to get close, the Legion called in support from the Hades.

The fighters launched missiles, the Hades and Legion both began firing antimissiles, and the Legion rushed in. Under the massive barrage of hundreds of anti-missiles, the defense bases focused completely on the missiles - allowing the legion to slip into point blank range and destroy three of the bases in a mere 25 seconds with gauss fire.

Then something unexpected happened. Seven new ships appeared beside the planet, presumably from the shipyards (production update). There were two 7000 ton ships classified the Asmara, three 14,000 ton ships classified as Littorio, and one 21,000 ton ship classified as Grecale. The seventh was a harmless Bolzano class, presumably a cargo ship, but the rest were far from harmless. They fired beam weaponry and bombed the Legion point blank with strength 10 warhead missiles, dropping the shields and causing heavy armor damage. The Legion's missile fire quickly took down one Littorio and one Asmara class ships, and the gauss fire took out the other Asmara.

Switching to the Grecale class, which was tearing into the Legion with beam weaponry, the legion pelted it with Gauss and then fired the last of its size 8 missiles to finish it off. The littorio ships then slammed the Legion with another volley of missiles, tearing through the heavy armor and causing some heavy internal damage. The Legion finished off another of the littorio class, then targeted the other. Right before the other was destroyed, it slammed the Legion with one last small volley.

The Legion is in pretty bad shape, but it's holding together. The ordnance is about gone too, but it had enough to bomb the ground units on Kaifeng Prime and the gauss weaponry was able to shred the enemy shipyards. Figuring they may have more ships in the area, I recalled the military fleet for repairs and rearming. The mission to cripple the aggressor was successful, with all their shipyards being destroyed. We've also dropped off our espionage team, who will hopefully provide useful details on the Kaifeng.

President's Personal Log, 21th April, 2118

We've picked up all the life pods of the ejected aliens and interrogating them. So far we have learned a few things about their technology, including warhead technology that's better than our current tech. The Legion also managed to repair some of her engines, and is up to 3750 speed now.

President's Personal Log, 26th April, 2118

Using extra supplies from the Hades, the Legion is now in full working order again - aside from armor damage, but the maintenance base can take care of that. They're going to start the trip through Middlesborough in a few days, the most dangerous part of the journey home due to the lack of shielding and missiles in a nebula.

President's Personal Log, 7th May, 2118

Disaster! Four ships, three Asmara and one previously unseen Sella class, 7000 tons each, were waiting on the Leyland side of the jump from Middlesborough. The Legion was targeted as soon as she entered the system, and before the sensors came online or the jump engines got ready for another jump they had destroyed her. The shields were still down from leaving the Nebula, and missiles began impacting almost immediately after entering Leyland. With the armor so heavily damaged, it only took two volleys. As soon as sensors became operational after the jump the Hades launched fighters, which destroyed two of the ships with the last remnants of their ASMs, then the Hades finished the other two off with AMMs and gauss weaponry. We've lost our flagship, and the only ship with a large military jump drive. This means the Hades is now stuck in the jump gate network. Luckily all the local systems are already connected, so the Hades can still get home.

Still, the loss of the Legion is terrible news. Of the 3746 crew aboard, only 1340 survived. Captain Amber Iqbal, commander of the Legion and thrice decorated war hero, was killed by a hit to the bridge. Her and her ship will be sorely missed.

With her goes the last of our advanced ordnance, leaving the Hades with nothing but recovered anti-missiles. More missiles will have to be produced for our fighters, and perhaps a new fighter design can be made to fill out the rest of the Hades' mostly empty hangar.

We destroyed the enemy's shipyards and bombarded their world, but they struck a terrible blow with their ambush in Leyland. I was expecting the trouble to be in the nebula, but catching the Legion right outside while her shields were still down and sensors were inoperable due to the jump was devastating, especially due to the armor damage caused above their homeworld when the ships appeared suddenly.

President's Personal Log, 6th September, 2118

Using the new warhead tech we beat out of the Kaifeng prisoners, Jennifer Evans has designed a missile with a 25% larger warhead at only a slight decrease in range.

Spoiler: Hornet III Missile (click to show/hide)

The Hades is fully repaired from the beating she took during the battles with the Kaifeng. New Serenity is steadily building ordnance factories, and production of the Hornet III missiles is underway. It will take several years before we're capable of producing a good quantity of ordnance, at which time the Kaifeng will likely have built more military ships. The lack of a listening post is problematic, as there is no way for us to monitor their progress. Once we have a good ordnance supply we may need to build more tracking stations to set up a new listening post somewhere in that region.

Perhaps the Joliette has more military ships to help in the war effort. Judging by the wrecks scattered across their systems, they lost a lot of their military assets to the Kaifeng before we stepped in - but they should still have their shipyards, while we destroyed the Kaifeng's. I believe we destroyed most, if not all, of their military assets as well.

President's Personal Log, 1st January, 2119

Today marks the 19th year we've been here, and this last year has been a lot of trouble. For reasons unknown to any of us, the Kaifeng attacked first our listening post in Leyland then our friends the Joliette Imperium. We managed to invade their home system and destroy all their shipyards and ground units, but the loss of the Legion and her captain was a high price to pay for it.

The salvage crew has been braving the danger of the area, and finding wrecks all over the place - mostly of Joliette ships except for the Kaifeng ships we destroyed. They also managed to salvage the Legion, taking some of the important parts off her. They managed to save all of her fire control systems - both point defense and missile. These will be put to good use on new ships, as they are better than any fire control systems we can currently manufacture. Sadly they were only able to save two of the gauss turrets, they would have been a real asset to go with the point defense fire controls with their 40k tracking speed.

On the manufacturing front, we're up to 27 ordnance factories and have made 8 Hornet III missiles so far. Many more of both are being built, but funds are running low. Scrapping the parts taken from enemy ships should help a bit with that when the salvage team returns. Should money run short, research may need to be postponed until we have a good supply of ordnance.

President's Personal Log, 2nd January, 2119

Following a suggestion of one of my advisors, I've decided to rename the system of Leyland to Teutoburg in honor of the Legion and her lost crew - named after an ancient Earth battle where the Romans lost many legions. Leyland-A I, where our listening post was destroyed and all this mess started, is also being renamed to Legion Memorial. A proper memorial will be constructed there once the Kaifeng threat has been dealt with.

President's Personal Log, 8th August, 2119

The salvage team has returned with a variety of scrap from Leyland and Greenrock.

At the behest of our scientists, I've decided to disassemble all the parts of the Legion except for the beam fire control systems. They will be saved for the next few ships we build to provide strong missile defense

President's Personal Log, 16th August, 2119

The Hound class fighter has been designed. It's far less effective than the Cerberus fighters, having half the armor, less than half the max speed, and only half the armament -  but we can mass produce them cheaply at our current technology. The Hades could hold 60 of them, or 45 with the 10 Cerberus already onboard. We'll begin construction of them immediately, although we only have one salvaged fighter factories from the ruins so we will need to build more factories before it becomes viable to produce them.

Spoiler: Hound class Fighter (click to show/hide)

A PDC base design is also just about finished, awaiting a large sensor that is still being researched - capable of detecting ships of size 6000 and up out to 1.1b km. The plan is for this sensor to spot targets and the Hound ships to fly out to meet them. The PDC base will house 60 Hound fighters and have AMM and meson defense capabilities.

President's Personal Log, 23rd August, 2119

Our entire civilian transport fleet - only three ships, but still - is currently in the Joliette system working for them. It's bringing in plenty of taxes on their profits.

A new civilian mining base was just established in Glasgow system as well. Combined with the scrap we got earlier in the year, we have a healthy treasury of 726 and the last few weeks we've been gaining money. Our financial worries may be over for a while.

President's Personal Log, 21st November, 2119

I've just been informed that the Prospector 3 narrowly escaped destruction in the Penza system. A single 800 ton swarm ship attacked it shortly after entering the system. Luckily it was only the one, and the Prospector 3 managed to escape back through the jump point before being destroyed. It's currently on the way back to New Serenity for repairs. I've marked the Penza system as inhabited by the Swarm, and all survey operations have been postponed until we are able to deal with them.

President's Personal Log, 17th December, 2119

Lieutenant Commander Ryan Davison was just killed in an accident. Thats the fourth public affairs officer to die in an accident in the last two years. What are they doing thats so dangerous? Is there some disgruntled citizen offing our public affairs representatives? We're running out of diplomatic officers to assign to the post. I guess I'll take another man off the diplomatic team assigned to the Kaifeng - they aren't doing much anyway. The position has already gotten a bit of a bad reputation, and if another one dies I'm afraid it's going to be difficult to get anyone to take the position - let alone someone with any competence at it.

President's Personal Log, 1st January, 2120

Today marks our 20th year here. There wasn't as much celebrating as I expected, I guess the threat of the Kaifeng and loss of the Legion still has the public in a somber mood. This is the last year of my first term as President. I intend to run again, and again Commodore Gibbs is my only competition. She has begun officially blaming me for the loss of the Legion, even though it was her plan and at her insistence that I sent them on the mission in the first place. Her platform is what amounts to genocide against the Kaifeng, with plans to research and build thousands of orbital bombs and send the Hades in to deliver them. The sad thing is she seems to be gaining public support.

I think I'll see about declassifying the whole Legion incident - from the planning phase to the actual mission - and make it available to the public, that should make her look like enough of a fool for her supporters to think twice about it. Commodore Hunt also suggests I generate some publicity about our highly trained mobile infantry brigade and 'leak' plans to topple the current Kaifeng government and take over the world for our Republic. I hate politics.

Our manufacturing is going well, and we're up to 54 ordnance factories and 9 fighter factories now. We've managed to produce 68 Hornet III missiles so far, and intend to produce many more.

President's Personal Log, 2nd February, 2120

They've just uncovered another vault of robotic soldiers on the Glasgow dig. The mobile infantry are taking care of it.

President's Personal Log, 2nd April, 2120

The population on Stevenage is complaining that we're not providing enough military support, but with only one ship theres not much I can do about it. I'm sending them a mobile infantry battalion to keep the peace until we can build a PDC there.

In other news, research on the PDC sensors is complete and a 56,850 ton PDC has been designed.

At our current production capacity it will take a year and a half to build one. I intend to construct one on New Serenity as soon as the ordnance and fighter factories have been completed, which should be in September of 2021.

Freya Thornton has begun a long term research project on R&D technology - among her ideas are an advanced rapid prototyping system and upgraded holographic CAD program. When completed this should boost our research rate by 25%. Her projected completion date is 23rd May, 2133.

President's Personal Log, 1st November, 2120

Terrible news! Commodore Gibbs won the election by a mere 50.5% of the votes. Apparently she got the vote of a lot of xenophobic people who wanted to see the Kaifeng dead. That and the entire population of Stevenage, they were angry because I left them without protection. What was I supposed to do with only one ship? That means this will be my last year in office, and January 1st she will take over.

President's Personal Log, 30th December, 2120

This will be my final log entry as President. Commodore Gibbs takes over tomorrow. She has already came in and began rearranging the furniture, and she gave a speech yesterday telling how she will destroy the Kaifeng so utterly that their planet will never again be habitable.

The crowd cheered.

May God have mercy on us all.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 1st January, 2121

I'm told my predecessor kept a log for posterity. I will do the same.

Today marks the beginning of a new era. We will no longer hide in the dark in fear of alien threats. I have temporarily canceled Freya Thornton's frivolous research and began immediate research on two new missiles. The Wasp III anti-ship missile, for use on our new military ships - which we will be building as soon as possible - and the Hellgate I Orbital Bomb, with enhanced radiation. We will construct a number of the Hellgate bombs and immediately launch a strike against the Kaifeng homeworld.

Spoiler: Wasp III Missile (click to show/hide)

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 14th March, 2121

The Hellgate bomb has been researched. I've stopped production of the Hornet and moved all production to the Hellgate. Production of the first 200 should be done next year, then we can give the Kaifeng a little dose of radiation.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 8th September, 2121

We have 80 ordnance factories and 40 fighter factories now. I've begun construction of our first military shipyard, something my predecessor should have done years ago. The defensive PDC can wait, we need greater offensive capabilities. It will be done in seven months.

Construction of fighters and missiles is going well too. I believe we'll have enough to launch another decisive strike against the Kaifeng by early next year.

I had to fire some of my advisors. They kept giving me strange looks. I think they were coming up with some kind of plot to kill me. I've commisioned some robotic personal guards to defend me, I'll program them myself to make sure they aren't tampered with.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 1st January, 2122

Our missile production is almost complete. Soon the Kaifeng will be destroyed. Nothing else matters right now.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 24th April, 2122

We've completed construction of the orbital bombs, and have a total of 160 Hornet III missiles. I'm loading the Hades down with 454 anti-missiles, 200 of the orbital bombs, and 100 hornets - with 66 more on the fighters, including 13 Hound fighters recently added to her fighter compliment. The time is now for the Kaifeng, we will crush them to dust.

Commodore Hunt, upon seeing his ship loaded with bombs and hearing the details of the new mission, has resigned from command of the Hades. Gutless coward. I'll command the ship personally. I'm bringing all fourteen of the Behemoth cargo ships with me for extra fuel and to load whatever we can take from their world, and as a distraction if I encounter overwhelming resistance. Officially they're along as observers.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 1st May, 2122

I'm almost to Middlesborough. Ah, it's good to be in charge of a ship again. Soon we'll be making the trek through Misslesborough, but with the destruction we caused their fleet last time I don't expect any trouble until we get into Kaifeng. Just in case, I'll send one of the Behemoths through first.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 9th May, 2122

I was just contacted and told the Intrepid 1 was lost with all hands in the new system of Llull. Something about a massive force of robotic ships, and that the Intrepid 2 barely escaped. Whatever, I never liked that Alice Murphy anyway. Don't they know I have more important concerns? I'm the vanguard of an invasion, I have no time for babysitting our incompetent explorers.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 21st May, 2122

We've made it to Kaifeng. So far, only one hostile - a 7000 ton ship we've labeled the Regolo. I've launched three of the new Hound class ships, let's see what they're made of.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 22nd May 2122

Excellent! The Hound ships killed their target with only 2 missiles and are back onboard reloading. If this is all they have, they're doomed. Moving deeper into the system now.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 27th May, 2122

Encountered a small 1000 ton FAC. Destroyed it with a barrage of 24 anti-missiles.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 1st June, 2122

We chased down ten 21050 ton ships, probably cargo or colony ships. The gauss turrets made short work of them. Tomorrow we'll be in range of their homeworld, and can release the bombs. I'll have them swap the bombs in for the missiles.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 2nd June, 2122

Ha! They had only built those two tiny ships in all this time. The cowards surrendered at the first volley of 66 Hellgate bombs, and I ordered the cargo ships load all the useful buildings on the planet. We also looted 23715 in wealth from the world, and another 10549 from scrapping their junk missiles.

I guess they thought surrendering would stop the bombardment. Fat chance, I still have all these bombs to drop - just as soon as I get most of the factories off.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 5th June, 2122

We've got most of the buildings. 82 automated mines, 361 construction factories, 3 tracking stations, 5 research labs, 95 ordnance factories, 2 ground force training facilities. That just left a few hundred mines on the planet, not too concerned about them. I have bombs to drop, no time for a second trip out here.

I've bombed them with all 200 of the Hellgate bombs. Looks like we killed about 200 million of their population - about a fifth, but the radiation is what will really do the trick.

Being President is great. After I get back and rearm we can come back and finish off these Kaifeng - a few more orbital bombs wouldn't hurt. And next I can deal with those Joliette. They've been way too friendly, they're obviously planning something.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 3rd July, 2122

Still on the way back to New Serenity. The bridge crew keeps giving me strange looks. They're up to something. I'll spend the rest of the trip in my quarters with the doors sealed. Glad I brought my guard bots.

I ordered the cargo ships to drop off some of the construction factories on the Stevenage colony and the archaeological dig in Glasgow, then bring them any minerals they're lacking. Once there they can begin building their own PDCs for defense. That should appease them when I'm not around to protect them. I have aliens to kill, no time to patrol the colonies.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 11th August, 2122

I've made it back to New Serenity, and news of my glorious victory has already reached the populace. The response isn't what I expected. There are tens of millions of them marching in the streets protesting. I saw one of them burning a dummy with my name on it. Someone is turning them against me. I suspect the former president. I'll have to kill him.

Until then, I've ordered the construction of many more orbital bombs, I have to rearm the Hades for my next trip out.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 15th August, 2122

Success! I lured the former president to my office under the ruse of a diplomatic meeting. My guard bots shot him and I wiped their memory of the event. I buried the body last night in the Presidential Gardens - no one goes there but me and the gardener, and I fired the gardener yesterday. Now the people will love me again.

Oh, and my shipyard is done. I've ordered it expanded indefinitely. I've also ordered the a PDC to be built on New Serenity next. With a defense PDC on each world, that should appease everyone that they're protected well enough next time I'm out fighting on the Hades.

President Gibbs' Personal Log, 3rd September, 2122

They're investigating the former president's disappearance. They'll never find him.

The public at large is still protesting, and there is talk of impeachment - as if they can do that, I'll never let them. I've moved my office permanently to the Hades to avoid the mobs every time I go outside. A video of the bombing of Kaifeng somehow got out, I suspect those idiots aboard the Behemoths I had follow me in to loot the place. Apparently they think I went overboard. I don't understand, isn't this what they wanted? I vowed to destroy the aliens, thats what I did. I still need to finish the job. Maybe they'll change their tune if I drop a Hellgate or two on New Serenity.

Administrator Ewan Law's Personal Log, 8th September, 2122

A lot has happened in the last month. News of the terrible assault on Kaifeng Prime, President Anna Gibbs returning to protests over her excessive actions, the disappearance of our former president, and the death of President Gibbs just yesterday. Apparently she had gone completely mad, and ordered a Cerberus fighter to launch and bombard New Serenity with the same radiation bombs she used on the Kaifeng.

Captain Conor Nixon, CO of that Cerberus fighter, instead shot the President - causing a firefight between a wounded President Gibbs with her robotic defense bots and Captain Conor Nixon with the entire Hades bridge crew. Both defense bots were destroyed, President Gibbs was killed, and several of the bridge crew seriously wounded. Captain Nixon then surrendered himself to the authorities on New Serenity and gave a full report of the situation. Surprisingly, no charges were filed against him or any of the bridge crew for assassinating the president. In fact, Commodore Hunt - the fleet commander - has assigned him as CO of the Hades. President Gibbs' funeral was short - her body was loaded in a missile tube aboard the same Cerberus she ordered to bomb New Serenity, and her body was jettisoned into the Glasgow-A star.

Investigation into President Gibbs behavior unearthed her journal, which solved the murder case of our former president. Her intentions toward the peaceful Joliette were particularly surprising. Allowing Anna Gibbs to become our president has revealed serious flaws in our government. A new law was voted in this morning that bars any military officer from becoming President while in active duty, and prevents the President from taking direct control of any warship.

With no one to lead our Republic, the senate voted this morning that, as administrator of New Serenity for the last 22 years, I was the best qualified to take control until a new vote can be held.

As my first act I'm sending our entire colony fleet to Kaifeng Prime to begin evacuation of the remaining population to Legion Memorial in Teutoburg. Ironically the Kaifeng people will be evacuated to the world dedicated to the warship that their government destroyed, the same place where the bombing of a small listening post started this whole disaster. Nothing we do can make up for the heinous actions of Anna Gibbs, but the least we can do is save as many civilians as we can from their irradiated homeworld. I'm also scrapping all remaining Hellgate orbital bombs - we never should have built them in the first place.

I'll send a mobile infantry brigade to protect Legion Memorial until a PDC can be built there. Building PDCs to protect our people is at least one thing Gibbs did right, even if the real goal was freeing up the Hades for more genocide.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 1st January, 2123

We've managed to evacuate 150 million of the Kaifeng so far, with 157 million still left on their irradiated homeworld. 100 million have already made it to Legion Memorial, the other 50 million are on our colony ships making the trip. The radiation is so bad I doubt it will have dissipated in any of our lifetimes. In the months since bombardment over 500 million Kaifeng have died from radiation exposure. Field hospitals have been set up on Legion Memorial, and those who have made it there so far are doing well. Luckily our colony fleet is capable of transporting so many at once, or many more would have died before we got even half of them off. I suspect many more will die before we can evacuate the last of them, but there's nothing more I can do about it.

Something will have to be done in the Llull system as well. President Gibbs brushed aside the death of the Intrepid 1's crew, and the attackers likely remain in the system. Once the evacuation of the Kaifeng is complete I will send the Hades to investigate.

Apparently the public approves of my actions, as a referendum was just passed assigning me as acting President for the remaining eight years of Gibbs' ten year term.

Dang.  Can't say I didn't see it coming, but bonus points for Gibbs going full on genocidal!

On the other hand, nice to see the Kaifeng primary government surrendered on such short terms.  Is it possible to create non-irradiating bombs for occupation purposes, or are they always irradiating?  (And are there actually any 'loyal' Kaifeng left in the Middlesborough nebula?  Who knows, they might make a comeback in 30 years or so...)

All bombs are irradiating. The Hellgate bombs were produced with increased radiation though. Standard radiation damage is equal to the warhead, while that one is 4x radiation 25% warhead size. So the effective warhead is only 14.75, while radiation is 236.

Theres a tiny Kaifeng colony in Middlesborough, but I doubt they'll ever do much. They probably don't even have any construction factories or minerals.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 2nd June, 2123

The evacuation of Kaifeng Prime is complete.
All told, we evacuated 287 million. Approximately 750 million, almost three quarters of their entire population, were killed in the bombardment or from radiation caused by the bombardment. A staggering loss of life.

The salvage team is busy in the Kaifeng system salvaging all the wrecks. They began at the same time the evacuation was starting, and will likely take many more months before they finish.

I've just been informed that we can't investigate the Llull system because the Hades has no jump drive, that was present only on the Hades. We'll have to delay investigation of the Llull system until we have jump capable warships again.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 1st September, 2123

Our first PDC is complete on New Serenity. I've begun construction of sector command facilities to improve our government. It's something that should have been done long ago, but was always pushed aside for different things.

I've been informed of a small Kaifeng Federation outpost in the Middlesborough nebula. It's probably only a few million people, but it's the last known bastion of that government. They also seem to have jump gate construction ships still active. We've only just begun exploring the jumpgate network they've been building. In the interest of keeping them from foolishly connecting our jumpgate network with potential enemy sites, possibly just to spite us, I've dispatched the Hades to seek out these ships and stop them. I hate to kill more of their people, but building jumpgates haphazardly across the galaxy all leading back to us could be dangerous.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 1st January, 2124

Today marks our 24th year here, and the beginning of my second year as Acting President. The Hades is still hunting gateships. It found and destroyed two in Geertruida, which the Intrepid 2 had spotted. Now it's out past Kaifeng looking for the other two that the Intrepid 2 spotted a few months back.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 6th March, 2124

Good news! The Joliette just informed us that they consider us a valuable ally. Their ships will protect ours from missiles if possible. Some members of the senate are still a bit suspicious of them, but I intend to work on them and get a formalized alliance set up between our two peoples. We already mutually share both gravitational and geological survey data, so this is the obvious next step in our relationship with them. At least one of our alien neighbors is friendly.

We've also completed the PDCs on both colonies in Glasgow. The 200 construction factories on Glasgow V moon 4 are being moved to Legion Memorial, so the Kaifeng can build the same PDC. Minerals are also being shipped in.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 7th April, 2124

The Hades tracked down two more gate ships in Bath system, as well as two survey ships that seemed to be surveying the system. It seems they built gates from Kaifeng to Adorea, to Ehrenberg, to Exeter, and finally to Bath - as well as gates between Douglas and Exeter. The jump between Ehrenberg and Exeter was not known to us, but the Hades picked it up with active sensors because of a gate being there. We also discovered tiny Kaifeng outposts in Bath and Ehrenberg systems. They likely have minimal populations, if any. I'm updating our map to show their positions to keep track of them.

In the map update, I'm also including the Joliette Imperium's new colony sites in Derby and Chorley - as discovered by our civilian sector in their shipping duties.

Thats the last of the Kaifeng gate ships that have been spotted so far. I'm recalling the Hades for refueling and an overhaul.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 22nd May, 2124

The team on the Glasgow ruins uncovered a research lab and details of advanced geological sensors. Good news when we want to build replacements for our lost Prospector ships. I've begun moving the engineering teams to the London dig, since the one in Glasgow is nearly fully recovered.

Freya Thornton's research on r&d technology has been going well. With all the extra labs I've been able to assign to her since my term began, she's making significant progress. She expects results in August 2127.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 8th December, 2124

The Tribal salvage team has returned from Kaifeng with a cargo full of various salvage. All total we got 2000 wealth from scrapping the parts, as well as thousands of minerals - including 8400 duranium, 2500 tritanium, 1800 mercassium, 1800 uridium, 3500 gallicite, and smaller amounts of all the other minerals. Our treasury is now 28000.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 1st January, 2125

Today marks year 25, and the beginning of my third year as acting president. We've built three sector commands, and now have all of our colonies governed by the New Serenity sector command. I've stepped in as sector governor, putting Samantha Richardson - former administrator of Stevenage and a good friend of mine - in charge of New Serenity. I've begun construction of more fighter factories, so we can get the fighters for these PDCs done in a reasonable time frame. Fighter defense platforms aren't very effective without fighters.

Theres only one installation left on the Glasgow dig. Hopefully it's not full of robotic soldiers, since they've transported the mobile infantry brigade to the London dig and only one engineer brigade remains behind to recover it.

Another concern is the naming of Glasgow-A V Moon 4 and Stevenage-B II. Both colonies have grown considerably, and have petitioned me to either give them a proper name or allow them to name their own worlds. I'll have to discuss the issue with my advisors.

According to the latest census, total populations on all colony worlds is:
New Serenity - 150.87 million (Human)
Glasgow-A V Moon 4: 42.17 million (Human)
Stevenage-B II: 19.92 million (Human)
Legion Memorial: 300.5 million (Kaifeng)

Not a whole lot in this one, since I decided to stop on year 2125 for input. Anyone want to name the two colony worlds?

I think I'm going to enable invaders now too. It should give me something challenging to fight and spice the LP up a bit, but it will have spoilery info about them when I start fighting them. What do you guys think?

Awesome writing, Paul! I love the story. Go ahead an enable the invaders; I wander what you'll call them.

Are you ever going to develop other races? They will allow you to inhabit different planets, but could cause political rifts within the empire.

This one has some spoilery info about the invaders. The invaders sure did come hard and fast, I didn't expect them to show up so soon and in that location.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 16th September, 2125

The Intrepid crew just barely escaped with their lives in the newly discovered Porec system. Thats the third system we have charted now with a robotic alien presence. This one has a jump gate going in built by the Kaifeng, but they thankfully never completed one going out - so the ships there aren't able to get into our jump gate network. I'll file the system as off limits until we eventually clear it out.

Construction is going well, and Stevenage now has its PDC. They're now building additional terraformers. Construction of the fighters and ordnance to go with the PDCs is taking longer however. More fighter factories are being constructed to get the fighters built faster, but it's going to take time. Until they are supplied, all the PDCs have to protect their worlds is meson defense turrets.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 1st January, 2126

Another year passed. We're up to 56 Hound fighters now, out of 285 that we need to outfit all our PDCs and the Hades. I've begun setting up some small listening posts in all of the systems in our gate network. Just one tracking station each, not enough to scan the whole system but they'll alert us if any ships are in the area surveying the planets.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 4th April, 2126

The senate has just approved the alliance with the Joliette. It took a little time, but we're now allies with our friendly neighbors.

We also recovered an abandoned mine on the London dig with mining technology that will increase our production from 14 to 16 tons per year per mine.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 15th May, 2126

We just detected a Kaifeng ship flying near Legion Memorial. The Hades has been dispatched to seek and destroy it. I don't want to kill their civilians, but I've decided to destroy any ships from their government we find.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 1st January, 2127

All is well, and we're up to 88 fighters now.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 4th March, 2127

A stable wormhole has been detected in the Glasgow system, within 1b km from New Serenity. Could this be Earth trying to make a link between our two galaxies, or is it something more sinister? So far nothing has come out of it, but I'm going to be monitoring the situation.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 19th April, 2127

A 12,800 ton ship with a thermal signature of 2560 just came out of the wormhole in New Serenity. I've sent the Hades to investigate. Definitely not from the Milky Way. The ship looks completely alien, nothing like even what we have seen in this galaxy.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 21th April, 2127

The ship we have classed as Gomati apparently has strength 330 shields. We also detected active sensors, resolution 100 with a max range of 48m km. When we closed to 48m km the ship began moving toward us at a speed of 10,000 km/s - the fastest ship we've seen yet. The Hades closed in to 2.6m km before detecting resistance. The ship was firing bursts of size 4 missiles moving at 80,000 km/s, with 25 seconds between volleys. We immediately launched fighters, with 45 hounds firing a total of 90 Hornet III ASMs at the target. The Hades' shields absorbed the missiles that got through point defense. Out of the 90 missiles, 43  impacted the target and 6 remained seeking a target. The rest were shot down or missed the target due to its high speed. The ship apparently has heavy armor but very volatile internal components, as the first 38 did not penetrate the armor. The 43rd hit something vital, as a size 165 secondary explosion was detected - which was what ultimately destroyed the ship.

The salvage team is moving in to investigate.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 2nd May, 2127

The Joliette just gave us access to their future research. A nice gesture, but with their technology being so far behind ours I doubt it will be anything useful for some time. Perhaps if we returned the favor, their research could catch up and any new findings they have could be relevant to us. I will have to discuss it with the senate.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 14th May, 2127

Advanced technology was salvaged from the alien ship. From the parts we took from it, it was apparently outfitted for anti-missile capability. We salvaged five anti-missile fire control systems, which were considerably advanced. We also got two inertial confinement fusion drives.

Another oddity is the missile systems. Instead of missiles, they appear to be some kind of size 4 plasma torpedos. We salvaged 8 of them. Our scientists disassembled them, but aren't much closer to understanding them than they were at first glance. It will take more of them to figure out exactly how they work.

The wormhole remains, so I am keeping the Hades on high alert with active sensors on near New Serenity - just in case more ships appear.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 25th May, 2127

Another 12,800 ton ship appeared from the wormhole, this time of a new class - we've called it the Ranjit. It immediately began heading for New Serenity. The Hades moved out and fired another volley of 90 missiles at it, but wasting 36 of them due to overkill. Apparently this class' defensive capabilities aren't as good as the other - if it's detected again we'll only fire 60 missiles. It was destroyed in a size 150 secondary explosion. Whatever these ships are carrying is quite volatile.

Perhaps if we continue to wipe them out utterly they'll stop coming.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 13th June, 2127

This new ship is apparently designed more for anti-ship capabilities. We salvaged larger size 8 torpedo launchers from it, as well as longer range higher resolution sensors. It also had EM and Thermal sensors.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 20th November, 2127

The stable wormhole in Glasgow just changed location. It's now even closer to New Serenity, only 132m km at the current orbital position. I've suggested moving the civilians to Stevenage just in case this turns into a full scale invasion, since the atmosphere there just became fully habitable last week - but the civilians will have none of it, they refuse to leave their homes.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 24th December, 2127

A bunch more ships just appeared in Glasgow. Five 6,000 ton ships moving at 8,000 km/s, one 125,000 ton ship moving at 6400 km/s, and two 64,000 ton ships moving at 10,000 km/s. The 64,000 ton ships have a detected shield strength of 1500. All of them are heading straight for New Serenity. We launched all available fighters at the enemy fleet - 107 Hounds and 10 Cerberus.

All total, 254 of our size 10 missiles were fired at one of the 64,000 ton ships. All but 10 of them were required to destroy it, and if not for the massive size 750 secondary explosion it likely would have remained intact. The 10 missiles were quickly destroyed by the other ship's point blank defensive fire.

The Cerberus fighters quickly returned and began reloading, but the Hounds were slower than the enemy ship and many were shot down one by one as they begin closing. The Cerberus fighters managed to fire off another volley, but half of them were shot down and the other 20 didn't seem to do any damage. They were radiating energy from their shields at a rate of 5.7037 per second.

73 out of 107 fighters made it back to New Serenity. 45 landed on the Hades, the rest landed on the fighter PDC. The enemy then began targeting our cargo ships, and our point defense proved useless against these 80,000 km/s missiles. The AMMs could barely hit them, and when they did they weren't destroyed - and the meson defense proved the same, hitting the torpedos but doing nothing. Thankfully the cargo vessels are heavily armored, and can take quite a beating - losing them is better than losing the colony. The fighters began frantically reloading. As soon as the Cerberus fighters reloaded, we had already lost two Behemoths - so we tried something desperate. The PDC and Hades began firing AMMs at the target, reloading from the stockpile of 6000 meant for the other PDCs that had yet to be delivered. After firing around 6000 AMMs the Cerberus fighters launched missiles, assuming their shields would have to be down by now. This too proved largely ineffective, but many of the hits made the ship stream atmosphere so we at least damaged it.

Soon the other ships began approaching. A 6000 ton ship attempted to ram the Hades, but was shot down by the PDC's Mesons last second. As the other 6000 ton ships approached, the Cerberus fighters were reloaded and every remaining fighter was launched to try and finally destroy the 64000 ton ship, which had so far destroyed 8 of our Behemoth cargo vessels. By the time the fighters had fired missiles, all but one of the 6000 ton ships had been destroyed - one doing minor damage to the Hades via ramming.

The second 64,000 ton ship was finally destroyed by this last volley of missiles.

Soon the 125,000 ton ship arrived. Fearing the worst, we launched a large volley against it - but it was destroyed much more easily, with 56 missiles self destructing due to lack of a target.

These ships are obviously far more technologically advanced than us. I doubt this was even the vanguard of their invasion - judging by the seeming noncombat nature of most of the ships, it was likely some type of scouting party.

I've ordered the colony ships back from Teutoburg to begin evacuations to Stevenage. Perhaps they won't know how to use jump gates? Doubtful, but I don't know what else to do.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 1st January, 2128

We're nearly out of ordnance, the Hades is being repaired, and another stable wormhole has appeared in Teutoburg. Things are looking grim.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 15th February, 2128

The pioneer ships have arrived on New Serenity and have begun evacuating colonists. I'm not really sure where to bring them... the only habitable world we have is Stevenage, but there are two wormholes only 2 jumps from Stevenage - in Teutoburg and Glasgow. The remaining six behemoth ships are going to bring our fighter and ordnance factories there as well.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 20th February, 2128

Another 64,000 ton ship has appeared in Glasgow, right next to New Serenity! The cargo ships are its closest target. Fighters have been launched to try and deal with it before it gets within range of them, but I fear our reduced fighter count is going to make destroying this ship difficult.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 21st February, 2128

Disaster! The missiles didn't even penetrate the ship's armor. They fully reloaded and fired another volley, but we lost all but one of the cargo vessels while reloading. The second volley damaged the ship further and slowed it down 10%, but now we only have 10 missiles left - nowhere near enough to penetrate its' shields a third time. Since our two full volleys didn't destroy it, I don't believe we'll be able to. We just don't have enough firepower left after destroying the other large vessels.

The colony ships are still on the run with 50 million of our people. The Hades and all fighters that can fit aboard have also begun fleeing the system. They are the only hope of defending Stevenage should these aliens get there.

The rest of the fighters have flown straight at the ship unarmed, hoping to distract them long enough for the Hades and the colonists to escape. Perhaps if they can get far enough away the ships won't follow them...

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 22nd February, 2128

The Hades was pursued and destroyed in a single volley. Our biggest warship, humbled by their firepower. The fighters are proving an effective distraction for the colonists at least, as the ship seems to be capable of only firing on one at a time.

Acting President Ewan Law's Personal Log, 23nd February, 2128

This will be my last log. I am sending it and the recordings of our last days to the colony ships as part of our final databurst. We have avoided sending anything through the gate to prevent the enemy from tracing it. I am also erasing all of our databanks - they won't get a thing from us, even if they can understand our computer systems. I'm most concerned with them finding out about Earth. Their wormhole technology might be able to reach even the Milky Way.

The situation here is beyond grim. All ships in Glasgow have been destroyed. The 50 million evacuees aboard the colony ships are going to make it, but I won't be alive to see them out of the system. They've begun bombardment of New Serenity, and tens of millions are already dead. Their weapons are devastating. Within minutes, the colony of New Serenity will be gone - and the world will be a nuclear wasteland. Already the temperature has dropped 20 degrees from dust. We've linked up with the survivors of the cargo ships, the Hades, and the brave fighters who tried to provide a distraction. They have only two weeks, but they will outlive all of us here on New Serenity. I fear the 45 million people on Glasgow V moon 4 will fall shortly after us, and there's nothing we can do about it.

I fear even you on Stevenage are in dire trouble. With the ships destroyed, you will be severely lacking in resources. I just pray these aliens won't find you.

Goodbye, and good luck my friends.

Administrator Isabella Gilbert's Personal Log, 1st March, 2128

They're... all dead. Everyone in the Glasgow system is gone. 150 million people...

The colony ships have arrived with 50 million evacuees, but our situation is grim. The cargo ships with fighter and ordnance factories and minerals were destroyed en-route. We have minerals present on our mining colonies, but no cargo vessels to get them. We have practically no mineral supplies, certainly not enough to mount any reasonable defense or even to build a shipyard for a cargo ship. And with the destruction of the hades, we have absolutely no defensive capabilities. We have a PDC, but the missiles that were to be delivered to it were used in Glasgow. All the fighters we were expecting to be delivered were destroyed in Glasgow. All we have is a PDC with meson defenses, which proved completely useless against the enemy's weapons.

The situation is a bit different for the Kaifeng in Teutoburg, but just as bad. Theres a wormhole there, and they're in the same situation as us resource-wise. They have a PDC and some ordnance factories to produce missiles, but the problem for them is they don't have any fighters either so none of their missiles would be of use. Considering the strength of the enemy ships, they would need 200+ fighters to stand a chance anyway. I fear we may all be doomed...

I just hope the people on Earth haven't suffered the same fate. We've followed President Law's example and erased from our databanks any mention of Earth or the galaxy we came from.

Administrator Isabella Gilbert's Personal Log, 15th July, 2128

Bad news from Teutoburg. Apparently one of the smaller enemy vessels has been detected by their deep space tracking system. If they had a fraction of the firepower that they had in Glasgow, they could defend themselves - but they have nothing but anti-missiles.

Administrator Isabella Gilbert's Personal Log, 22nd July, 2128

I fear the worst for the Kaifeng on Legion Memorial. I haven't heard from them all week. I can only assume they didn't send a last message to keep our existence a secret from the enemy. I've spoken to the Joliette about these aliens, and they have never heard of them either. I fear they are likely as doomed as we, as their technology is far inferior to ours. If only I could convince them to send us some resources, or bring us back to their world - but they are too afraid to send any ships close to us since the enemy has been detected in two jumps in two separate directions from our system.

With no ships and the last of our trans-newtonian minerals running out, there is simply no way for us to build ships. The last of us, just over 70 million survivors, have come together and decided to bury our technology and scatter to the far winds on this world. Perhaps if we destroy our installations and scatter to prevent them from detecting signs of civilization from orbit we can have a chance to live out our days in peace.

What started as 50 million colonists, lost in another galaxy, has ended with 70 million refugees - going back to a simpler life on a distant world as one last hope of survival. I am sending this log, along with all the rest of our data, toward Earth in a light speed repeating databurst straight across the vastness of space. And then we will bury everything.

The aliens will never have a chance of intercepting our signal. It will take 2.9 million years just to reach Earth, and I doubt anyone will ever read it - but it is the last hope we have of ever letting those in the Milky Way know what happened to us. I am including everything - our arrival, our happy years and good relations with the Joliette, the terrible nearly genocidal war with the Kaifeng, and the end of our civilization at the hands of these aliens from another place.

If this message ever reaches anyone, remember us.

Well, not an unexpected twist (given you turned on Invaders), but still kind of sad that it's all over. Still, it was a good run and did turn up some ways to refine the scenario (which I might give a shot when my current game ends or I get tired of not finding anything that wants to shoot me).

Hope you decide to LP your next game, too. I enjoyed reading the write-ups while my own turns were processing.

Yea, I don't think I'll turn on invaders in my next game - at least not until I have enough tech and ships to fight them off.

I expected them to appear in a distant system or two and be an ever present enemy for a while, not pop up on my capital after 2 years and come with three huge ships and wipe everybody out. It's like they were seeking the populated systems - popping up in Glasgow where 200 million were, and then Teutoburg where 300 million were.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As far as my next game, I'm thinking of doing a conventional start LP and trying to get more community involvement. Maybe let people decide which techs to focus on, how to treat alien races, which worlds to colonize and how (infrastructure alone, infrastructure and terraforming installations, or maybe a massive terraforming fleet), naming colony worlds and systems, etc. Could even do fun stuff like putting people in the game in the form of commanders or scientists. It would be a little more effort on my part, but it might be fun. The caveat is that I would steer it in the direction of getting early action instead of turtling up (which makes for a boring game imo), so once basic military ships are built and survey ships are operational I'd start exploring even if people told me to stay in Sol for another 20 years and get X tech first. :P It might get everyone killed, but losing really is fun.

Would anyone be interested in that? I just want to make sure that there would be enough interest to keep something like that going.

I'd certainly contribute. I'm not entirely sure how well it would run, between waiting for input and the inevitable disagreements on policy, but if we get enough folks it should be fun while it lasts at least.

EDIT:

Oh, the party's already started.
