Put it this way; a speculative blog post, here:

http://www.bruceongames.com/2009/07/16/is-evony-malware/

Led to the company attempting to sue the man, despite him having actual backings in research and the company itself not having much else to say other than "LIES AND SLANDER." This is with art assets quite obviously stolen from other games and some coding thrown in with. Luckily they dropped the charges after a lengthy court hearing due to, I don't know, not having a real case, and hoping that the courtroom wouldn't turn on them after other evidence presented itself.

I did have some friends a year or so back who ran into some trojan trouble as well; all leads point to staying away from a game that's one step away from a Facebook click/payfest.

If you want a game in a similar vein that's not 80% ripped off from other games and 20% sweatshop programmed, try Tribal Wars or Travian. At least they haven't had to change their name four (or more?) different times in order to escape copyright infringement lawsuits.

Sorry, it's not that we don't like you, it's just that Evony is actually a pretty scammy operation
fair enough i why is it so bad for my pc?

Etc. The fact that a browser based game harvests any information (such as contacts through Skype, Windows Live, and other messenger systems) is pretty bad and likely opening your computer up for a host of other, nastier bugs.

Before I go to bed, here's the rest of the entries. It was a fairly big story circulating around my classes at the time, considering that quite a few of my friends and classmates played this.

TL;DR: Chinese corporation who owns Evony/Civony/Whatever the hell they call it now tried to sue someone for calling them out rather than simply owning up to it or otherwise denying it in a more polite manner. The entire situation was a bit of a weird thing, but the Youtube video explains it a bit better than I could.

Seriously, stay away from this game~

I'd recommend Utopia Online if you want that sort of game, text-only it's been going since 1998 i think and has a fairly nice kingdom system where you are only a province, and have to work together with your fellow barons to fend off attacks. Or u can backstab each other and flail around.

And you vote for your Monarch, and have an in-kingdom messaging system etc, used to play that quite a bit.

I would consider starting again if a group was interested in trying to get a clan going. Pretty sure Utopia are the good guys, HTML only game should be pretty safe from trojans and the like?

... dude, utopia is still around? Wow i stopped playing it ages ago and thought it went the same way as a few other browser games i played back then ( i think one was called earth 2040 or something)
I used to have a fair amount of fun Playing one called Imperial conflict, the politics/infighting was rather intense and really added to the experence IMO
And one i liked called extroverse, which was based on Imperial conflict and never really got past beta, usually low numbers of players but the game was basically finished and very fun, only real problem was that the game usually had rather fast turns that encouraged obsessive playing (10 minute ticks)
Someone made a reskinned german version called drowned world which ran 1 hour and 20 min ticks, it was very well balenced and had races like dwarves, elves etc, i played it a bit... ok i'm ranting now, what i actually meant to say was that i never had any good experiances with evony, you waste many hours a day for weeks building your infrastructure up doing nothing more exciting than staring at spreadsheets( albiet with low quality graphics) ajnd then as soon as you leave protection you get roughly molested.
I've played lots of browser games and evony is the absolute least balanced.
personally i find games with some kind of arbitary limit on who you can target tend to work quite well, do you attack the guy half your size 3 times Till your fleet is exhausted, or wait till the guy your size is weakened by another war and attack him 20 times, or do you wait till that guy 5 times your size has his army marching (you can tell when wars are occuring by watching systems change hands and watching networth jumping around. or by test attacks)   and attack him 40 times?
er...... /Rant

I think Utopia's survived because of their slightly more developed diplomacy system.

Whereas in all the other game similar you're a King, and interaction is limited to vague alliances and attacks (See WarBook game on face book, which I would still play before Evony), utopia has the whole unpredictable kingdom provinces thing, so you need to negotiate and have a dialog with other players who end up in the same kingdom.

Wow, I haven't played Utopia and its sci-fi sister since the 90's. Bringing back some mega nostalgia for me.

Last time I actually played as about year 2000 as well. Like I said it's fun, but you really need a group to play together, since it's a heavily alliance based game.
