Above ground farming in mountains?
« on: September 03, 2011, 08:48:18 am »

I've just read that above ground farming doesn't work at all in the mountains, and as I want to build an above ground village in the mountains, this is a problem. Is there a way to edit the raws(?) to allow farming in the mountains? I have a small amount of experience in simple 'adjustments' so with some instruction, I should be able to get it to work.

Also, is there a way to allow dwarves to embark with above ground seeds?

Thanks,
Egg.

About above ground seeds, you must add [OUTDOOR_FARMING] (I think it's written like that) in their entity file.

About the rest, interesting question, I'd like an answer too (mountains and whatever)

I tried that and all it did was wipe my points to zero, and I couldn't add any new seeds to my embark list. Is there somewhere specific in the Dwarf raws that I need to put this? I put it inbetween [CANOPENDOORS] and [PREFSTRING:beards].

It goes in the ENTITY file, not the CREATURE file. :)

EDIT - Not sure on above-ground farming in the mountains though, sorry. :\ You could try to embark with at least one square of some other biome and then do all your farming in that one square - down in the lush valley near your village, as it were.

Yeah sorry, it's entity_default.txt (the dwarves' entity[that is, their civilization] is the first, you'll find [INDOOR_FARMING], add it after that)

Oh, that makes sense. I hadn't realised that file existed before. Out of curiosity, does anyone know which file [PRONE_TO_RAGE] goes in?

CREATURE. If it's on the creature token list: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Creature_token it goes in the creature file. If it's on the entity token list: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Entity_token , it goes in the entity file.

Yeah, I've just ran into the mountain farming problem as well.

Does any of the experienced modders know if this is hard coded?

(Ugh, these hard coded things are REALLY annoying)

I think adding [BIOME:MOUNTAIN] to all the plants that you want should allow them to be grown in mountains.

Tested and confirmed. Thank you.

(The original biome says "Not Freezing", but even if the temperature is high enough, Mountain is still considered freezing).
