Ultima 4 for Free
« on: September 02, 2011, 09:12:04 pm »

I have heard great things about it, but I never played it.

Ultima 4 is available for free at GOG.

It might be free on Abandonia, but GOG makes it free and easily playable on my Windows 7 machine.

Oh so very neat. I notice they've got Ultima 1-3 for sale there, which is also quite cool, though they were before my time. If they get 5 and 6 on there, well, that would be like my birthday and Christmas come on the same day. Maybe with a hint of New Years thrown in there.

Origin released Ultima 4 for free ages ago, before they were bought by EA... There's nothing about it on wikipedia, but my memory is apparently more reliable.

Abandonware's sort of a grey area if you know what I mean.

Except that Origin released it for free and allowed it to be distributed for free by anyone, making it not legally grey at all, unless EA at some point decided to shit on Lord British's wishes and reverse that policy.

Having a version ported to windows is a nice idea, though. Oh, hm, it uses DOSBox. Nevermind. What's this publicity about then? Does it include the 256-color improvements, I wonder? *installing to find out* (Not that I don't already have it installed somewhere)

... why is this taking so long to install? It's like 600 KB in the Ultima Collection.

So, speaking of DOSbox... anyone know a good frontend for it? The couple I tried completely failed. Win7 64bit doesn't like this stuff, apparently.

Just plain DOSBox with an autoexec setting to mount my games folder worked perfectly fine for me on Win7 x64.

Hmm. It makes the screen funny when it's open. Oh, and how'd I play it windowed?

Thanks for informing me of the free game :D
If only GoG did give-aways, like Valve did with Portal when it came out for Mac....
