Spoiler: Stone Picks (click to show/hide)

That basic format works for making rock weapons and tools as long as you specify a workshop. If you embark with a few stones and logs you can get to business and bypass metal all together. Girlinhats idea was much more awesome but I haven't done any real coding since high school so I only have a loose understanding of what any of it means.

Quick question for OP - if you have no metal, how do you mine stone? A read through the wiki says you need metal for picks, and that you need picks to mine.

Which brings up another thought - if you can mod to make picks out of other materials, how effective at mining would they be?

Mod in a digging stick for digging through clay/loam/soil/sand

For rock clearing you would need to get rocks to shape holes in a rock block, kinda like making corrugations in paper, and put boiling water into the holes
or summat
then you would use stone tools again to shape it up

dunno how well that would work for some stones, but it works for some stuff like limestone just look at what the mayans did
no idea how you would mod that in :s

Primal fort is thriving. Pottery and glassmaking generate more than enough fortress wealth for healthy trading and my glass weapon traps have no problem chasing off nasty beasties.  Using raw ore generates forterss wealth surprisingly quickly and I've had no trouble keeping the booze stockpile above 150 by trade and foraging. My military is outfitted with multiple layers of cloth robes and capes that can stop edged weapons weaker than steel and their armed with stone spears, picks, atlatls, and obsidian short swords all of which can do serious damage to an unarmored part of the body. However bone gauntlets and boots do very little to stop damage and one of my dorfs had his finger shattered by a toad. The only real block that I'm surprised didn't come up in planning is that you'll either have to deal with periodic bouts of insanity or use use runesmith to remove the metalworking skills of your migrants not being able to deal with their moods gets to be annoying real fast.
It's a nice straightforward challenge that with a little doing is a great blend of fun and Fun.

You could murder any migrants with metal-related skills for being heretics.
