top level body now is a long chain of small segments similar to an entire ant.Acquire the ability to "hibernate". In hibernation, we will seem lifeless and feel like rock. We will also have no body temperature or make any movement. This way we can hide ourselves when necessary.

a kill switch for every not useful is implemented, you realize that maybe, sometime, food might be a problem and you'll need to just wait. like now since there are no ants around anymore. you also realize the need to keep perfectly still while doing this.
Grow a brain
you start changing free unspecialized cellular filaments into mind filaments. the three extra filaments which are not specialized or rock-like are immediately atrophized as nerves begin stretching through them, and as they are placed inside the rock-like protection.
Consume 2 filaments to improve mental capabilities, (i'll go with the precedent "grow a brain" and add your number limitation) then start to think about powers you can acquire.
