...So, yeah, does this usually happen? Because I lol'd, many times. There's a lot of male elf princesses and queens in this world...

Seriously though, it's most likely a world gen bug. it's possible that there are no female elves, so the game snapped, and because elves are immortal(I think), they don't need to breed to survive, Hence why you saw males taking up female positions.

Actually, I think this is really common. And it only happens with Elves. Take that as you will.

worldgen doesn't respect caste requirements for entity position, it's a known bug.

Simple... Dwarf monarch:

[POSITION:MONARCH]
[NAME_MALE:king:kings]
[NAME_FEMALE:queen:queens]

...and the Elf:

[POSITION:LEADER]
[NAME:queen:queens]

[POSITION:GENERAL]
[NAME:princess:princesses]

Easily fixed by modding, say

[POSITION:GENERAL]
[NAME_MALE:prince:princes]
[NAME_MALE:princess:princesses]

EDIT: theres a [GENDER:FEMALE] tag but I think the game just ignores it.

Yeah, the gender requirement thing is not working. It's just a bug with a token. And it doesn't work in worldgen only, during the game it works.
