Author Topic: Drop Dwarf in water, proof of concept that could lead to Obsidian Cast Drop Pods  (Read 9826 times)

Caging could still be used as a rapid (one way) vertical transport system, to somewhere you've explored. Just have a resident dwarf mechanic ("Beam Me Down, Spotty") burrowed at the bottom to build / release the occupant. Presumably you've already dug down to wherever you're going anyway.

The top could be mostly automated - put the dwarf on a hatch/bridge (called the "teleport chamber"). They drop to a cage trap and they get caged, then a burst of water (by lever, or maybe due to a time-delayed reaction to whatever dropped them onto the trap) pushes the cage down the tube. Then, you open the caging area and your mechanics refill the cage trap.

We just need a faster way to get 'up' now.

I'm sure that wasn't the intended effect of that post, but I'm so using that next time for a deep(er) fortress, as a way to bring migrants down faster.  :D

Small question, did anyone try dropping a dwarf in 7/7 water into a pool of 7/7 water and draining it to see if he lives? 5 z-levels minimum. I somehow can't find a way to get any of my men in water...at all.

<Was going to test it but failed due do inefficiency>

You have to get them to stand somewhere dry, then either drop the floor out from under them into a pool or fill the chamber with water.

Could you make cages out of some (modded) material that freezes at cavern temperature but melts when it lands onto slightly magma heated floor?
And yes, going back is a problem, but what real dwarf wants to go back upstairs anyway?

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

How viable i'm not sure of, i dont recall much about materials and temperature, if constructed objects can melt, but i know you could make them catch fire not that that would help the poor occupent.

Well embarking on a glacier and building a pipe down to a chamber with magma under the floor should test whether dwarfs can survive being dropped in a cage made of a melting material.

I don't know whether that would be even considered a "cage release" or what would happen to the creatures inside the cage. After all, they're not really in 'normal space' when they're in a cage, nothing effects then they're in this weird 'cage space'

Probably Toady has already considered at some point what should happen to units contained in a cage when it's destroyed, so they'll probably be all deployed into the square the cage is in, so I say this idea has potential.

IF you could mod in Dwarves being cage-storable, you could theoretically stick your excess population in a kind of "stasis".  Or load them all into a single cage and drop them down to the lowest point you can to kiss the surface goodbye all at once.

They're cage storable NOW without modding, if they hit a webbed cage trap or drop 1 z-level onto a regular trap. Also can be caged during combat if they dodge etc. Or if they go unconscious on the cage square too, i think.

couldnt you just put several hatches throughout the chute with say 3 z levels of water above each, then, averaging out how fast water falls and how fast the dwarf falls, have all the hatches open at once so that it generaly timed to be a near constant falling collumn that drains out at the desired z level into say grates outside of the drop chutes level door that catches the water and recycles it.

completely re fillable from the top down if you work it right.

Stasis? Caged dwarfs still need to drink and eat. I know what I'm talking about, I've had a few victims over the forts.

They do need to eat and whatever while in a cage, but they won't need to stay inside for long if you just want to drop them.

A system like this might be a good idea if you can find a way of knocking your dwarves out so they don't drown.
Just make a shaft that goes down all levels you might want to drop into with each level equipped with airlocks and floor hatches, then you just need a complex system to submerge your dwarf, knock out your dwarf, open all hatches down to target level except for the one under dwarf, fill shaft with water, open floor hatch, wait for dwarf to fall down to bottom, close all hatches, drain water underneath dwarf, waked him up, open airlock, and release...
Multiply by however many you want to drop.... Not the simplest system i'll admit.
