Finding stuff in my old fort?
« on: September 01, 2011, 08:54:59 pm »

I want to go into my fort without all the good loot getting scattered around everywhere. Is there anyway this can be done? Masterwork Adamantine Armor along with Masterwork Adamantine Weapons await me!

Using dfhack's dflair you can change the embark so items don't scatter.

Either that, or find a  way to put them all in lead bins - apparently, the heavier items are, the less far they move when everything is scattered.

Every few miles, [the dwarves] stop the cart.  One of the dwarfs (sic) gets off, digs a hole down below the dirt layers, licks the bedrock, and then they know exactly where they are.  It's called GPS: Geological Piquancy Sampling.

I don't think that's true. Item's don't 'move'. They just get randomly put anywhere on the map, including areas they couldn't actually get to.

Yeah, use dflair. It works. The stockpiles will still be gone, and the items will be forbidden, though.

Hmmm... I downloaded dfhack and it looks like I can run df and use some options, but there is no dflair among them. (I use the Ubuntu version).

It seems the new version with plugins doesn't have it yet. Grab it off the legacy thread -  http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=58809.0

lead bins or gold bins work perfectly, items definitely get randomly moved, but the heavier an item is the less likely it will move.  All stockpiles disappear, but the heavy metal bins will remain exactly where you left them, tested time and time again

I have been told that items sealed in a room by solid walls on all 6 sides with absolutely no way in but breaking down the constructed wall with another constructed wall/floor or natural floor w/o a wall underneath dropped on top of it in a cave-in will not be removed or added to the room during item scattering. It needs testing, I suspect.

Since items seem to teleport wherever the hell they want, I doubt it.

However, items used in buildings will not scatter.

Using the display case mod, I can build many display cases (with items I want) on top of support pillars linked to a lever. In adventure mode, I pull the lever and pillars collapse, deconstructing the display cases and leaving the items on the floor to pick up.

I even modded in a "Locked Vault" building that incorporates several chests and 10 items of my choice.
