Hey Guys,

So, ive been getting into the jive of DF recently, and now im futher than ive ever been!

However, ive dug out a massive area for later things, and ofc it is covered in stone, which i will dump near my mason when hes got his workshop, but ive also struck gems and ores...

And i have no idea what to do with them :S

There is some gold opals, some red ones, and limonite... all over. Some of my dwarves started placing some of the red gems on the refuse! Retards :/

Here is a pic: (sorry bout the mess, im using the workshops temporarily to do a few things to keep the booze coming in, then i will be organizing the wood and workshops ect. downstairs )



Well you cant see the red stuff there, but oh well...

So, what do i do with the gems and gold? :S

Limonite is yellow, but not gold. It's far better; limonite is an iron ore!

And eventually you will have built a jeweler's workshop (b-w-j) and you can order people to cut the gold opals and "red ones" (what are these named? ) Among your migrants you might see a Gem Cutter or Jeweler who already has the skill needed to do this well, but you can always tell some other yokel to do it. These gems are then decent trading items (light and relatively valuable) and can also be used to 'encrust'  finished goods (like toys and totems), furniture (like beds and doors) and ammo (bolts, of course) which makes them more valuable. A bed room with a valuable bed is considered a better room than one with a crummy one, of course, but for most Dwarfs you shouldn't bother with giving them very expensive furniture.

You can change the settings of a stone stockpile to only accept ores and other more important stones; you don't need to stockpile all the chunks of granite and what have you. You'll be swimming in that later. Place a gem pile for the gems.

Gems are processed at a Jeweler's workshop to be cut and used to decorate other items. Or occasionally turned into large cut gems, which are end products.
Ore is used for the metal industry, which requires a smelter and forge. Certain metals can be made into weapons or armor.
You sure the red gems really are gems? And the refuse pile doesn't include those gems?

Right, i sort of know what is going on now

Apart from the trading, he came and i had NOOO idea what to do

Turns out i was running out of food, so i had to murder some animals, but now i have absolutely NO drink

Everytime i try and brew more drink, it says it was cancelled because of 'Non distillable items'. I dont know how to fix this, but my farm is empty even though its set to have seeds all year round :S

How can i get more drink?

Via trade and via farms. However, what seeds are you asking your Dwarfs to plant in your farms? I suggest telling them to plant plump helmets in a single farm all year round. Plump helmets are distillable in Dwarven beer/wine/rum, not sure which.

I'm asking myself that very same question now... pub lunch I reckon.
