Random liquids for trade?
« on: September 01, 2011, 12:03:17 pm »

Dwarven traders have just come to my fort offering GCS venom, and in the bast humans have offered barreled blood to me. Is there any point in buying these substances, in the name of !!SCIENCE!!.

Stuff like Dragonfly Ichor is also there. Is this stuff just there for the sake of being there, or are there any uses.

Ta,
EggFibre.

Useless without modding.  Even the venom isn't any use, since there's no way to inject it into enemies at the moment.

You could always mod the game to make blood cookable, if you want your dwarves to be able to make blood sausages or black pudding.

Shame, it would've been cool to have used the venom in some tests. Coating military blades with poison would be cool too.

Anyone know if Toady has any plans for these liquids?

I read somewhere in the wiki that gnomeblight can be effectively used by breaking vials and watching gnomes dissolve in the puddles. Would it be possible to do the same with barrels of GCS venom? Or is there no way yet to destroy a barrel and have its contents leak out? Or better yet, get the venom transferred to vials?

Where exactly on the wiki was that stated?

It's not possible to break vials - what you have to do is abuse a bug/loophole with the trade depot logic - you haul the container to where you want the "poison puddle" to be, forbid the liquid itself (but not the container itself), then order the container to be brought to the trade depot. The type of container does not matter - it works with barrels, vials, and even buckets (which makes it useful for dealing with the "buckets containing both water and lye" bug that makes soapmaking more difficult than necessary).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Ah okay, I just went back and checked the article... My memory did not serve me properly xD So in that case, would the same process be useful for GCS venom? Or will it not work on contact?

Why don't you look at the raws for giant cave spider venom and find out? The answer should be fairly obvious.

Unfortunately no. Since GCS venom needs to be injected into the blood I don't think it would work. You might be able to get around that by coating bolts and then getting them stuck in their targets, but I wouldn't hold high hopes for it.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
