Rome Sweet Rome: A spontanious short story
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:50:43 am »

Spoiler: The poster (click to show/hide)

Check it out!

It answers the question, "Who would win in a fight, ancient Rome or a modern military force?"

Currently written in a "flash fiction" style omitting dialog and detail to get the primary thrust of the story out, it is expected that the author will continue the story and expand the existing portions.

I read the first 8 days/chapters (before you linked to it), and it was awesome! I look forward to following their adventures in time.

Reddit confuses the hell out of me, as does any new site layout, so it'll be a while but I'm gonna work at it cause this kicks ass.

I can't stand masturbatory fiction that takes itself seriously.

Doesn't sound too interesting, TBH. "Who would win in a contest between the ancient Roman Military and a modern one?". There is no doubt as to what the realistic answer would be.

Plus, as Il Palazzo said, somehow I suspect it draws as inspiration the terribad genre that is the so-called "military scifi" (populated by Pournelle et al). With whiffs of the also horrid novel "Roma Eterna", by Robert Silverberg.

Also, something of a minor point, but
Quote
Nelson begins assembling a list of possible interpreters from his Spanish-speaking soldiers, and at the suggestion of a classically minded major he adds the dozen or so Marines fluent in German.
Not too inspired...

Well, you tried it, and you don't like it. That's all I can ask.

Warner Brothers is making a movie out of this now. If you want the link to the story, browse the first page of Reddit.

It's interesting, I'm already pondering how I'd fight it.

1. Shock and awe into Rome.
2. Set everyone to production of muskets and gunpowder.
3. Train troops in those for when contemporary weapons and fuel run out.
4. Build ships to sail for middle east. Seize Saudi Arabia and jury-rig oil wells and refineries.
5. Accidently industrial revolution.
6. Conquer the world.
7. ???
8. Profit!

Uh, a modern military force would completely demolish the Romans. Was anyone in doubt about that? Unless you're introducing some ridiculous conditions like "they only have one helicopter and three guns between them" or "Romans can breathe fire."

I think it might be something more like they run out of fuel and food before they manage to defeat any threat the Romans pose.

Look at Shaka's victories against the much-better equipped british army, too. And there's always guerrilla warfare.

The Roman Empire wasn't fond of guerrilla warfare. They were bad at it.

Very bad at it.

I still think my plan is the only viable way to do it.
