Build a second thaumatank. We don't want to risk damaging it until we have a spare blue-print...

WHOO LOST SHIT TO A FIREFOX CRASH OR SOMETHING

But yeah, you can't actually build Thaumatanks yet. That aside, it's very hard to damage (except with Explosives) and when it does lose all its HP, it's more likely to be disabled than destroyed since nobody has supermegaawesome boom yet.

Man of /Ambition/ - Update 5, "Scouts! Scouts Everywhere!"
« Reply #107 on: September 05, 2011, 03:04:50 am »

Current Force:
-Armor/Vehicles
= 1 Thaumatank (100/100 HP, 100/100 Morale, 32/32 Mana)
-Squad A
= 2 Magitech Elites (60/60 HP, 50/50 Morale, 7/7 Mana)
= 5 Recruits (20/20 HP, 10/10 Morale, 1/1 Mana)
= 1 Magitech Sergeant (50/50 HP, 32/32 Morale, 7/7 Mana)
-Squad B
= 2 Magitech Elites (60/60 HP, 50/50 Morale, 7/7 Mana)
= 7 Recruits (20/20 HP, 10/10 Morale, 1/1 Mana)
-Squad C
= 2 Magitech Elites (60/60 HP, 50/50 Morale, 7/7 Mana)
= 7 Recruits (20/20 HP, 10/10 Morale, 1/1 Mana)
-Squad D
= 2 Magitech Elites (60/60 HP, 50/50 Morale, 7/7 Mana)
= 7 Recruits (20/20 HP, 10/10 Morale, 1/1 Mana)
-Reserves
= 4 Magitech Elites  (60/60 HP, 50/50 Morale, 7/7 Mana)
-Training
= 3 Magitech Elites (Training)
= 3 Magitech Sergeants (Being Trained)

Locations:
-The Shell: 520 Civilians, 7 Respect, 4 Fear, 2 Loyalty (Generates 7.1 labor: 3 Large Farms, 1 Foundry, 2 Factories, 1.1 Salvage))
= Garrison: PC, 15 Magitech Elites, 4 Magitech Sergeants, 26 Recruits; 1 Thaumatank
= 1 Laboratory, 6 Large Farms, 10 Residential Zones, 2 Barracks, 1 Foundry, 2 Factories
= 4 Unmanned Foundries, 8 Unmanned Factories, 26 Undeveloped Space
= Produces 600-566 = 34 Surplus food; 44 Raw Materials
= Processes 40 Raw Materials into 20 Resources, 20 Resources into 10 Equipment
= Current Stockpiles: 234 Food, 14 Raw Materials, 5 Resources, 10 Equipment

No Loots/Raiders/Bandits/Slavers/whatever have attacked this week.
Salvagers were not attacked.

Scouts deploying.

-Days 1-2
= Squad A scouts northeast, spots a village. They could have reached it at the end of the second day, but decided not against it. No encounters.
= Squad B scouts west, finds nothing of value. Runs into a small Raider camp. Raiders do not spot them. Raiders determined to have about 5 men. Engage?
= Squad C scouts east, spots a village about 3 days farther away (4 days total). No encounters.
= Squad D scouts south then southwest, spots a village about 2 days farther away (5 days total). No encounters.
-Days 3-4
= Squads A, C, and D return to base and report their findings.
= Squad B, does the same, engages, or stalks the Raider camp and awaits backup.
-Days 5-6
= Squads A and D make a follow-up visit to the rather close northeast village to scout its military potential and the like; a patrol from the village takes potshots at them while disengaging to return to the village. Unfortunate. They were able to estimate that they received conventional Small Arms fire but had no further useful data.
= Squad B returns to base and reports findings if it successfully engaged the Raiders or engages with Squad C as backup.
-Day 7
= B and C return to The Shell if they engaged the Raiders together. They may not be back in time for next week, but with the Wonders Of Radio you can issue orders to them in the field.

Victory against the Raider camp would yield Food and small quantities of Raw Materials and Resources, as well as a small amount less Equipment than they had to be retooled for free into Magitech Equipment. In addition, any non-fatally-wounded Raiders are captured, and when imprisoned you can interrogate them. Interrogation can yield information about other Raider camps and possibly even extra points in Doctrine: Mobility, the Raiders' primary (and only) Style/Doctrine scale-y-thing.

We should probably get Squad A to deal with raiders, to minimize casualties on our side. Or just get C or D to reinforce B and take the camp out together.

As to the suddenly hostile village, perhaps some gunboat diplomacy is in order? Once the raiders are done, we could leave most of our force in the Shell, and take the Thaumatank with five Elites to the border of that village, explicitly not opening fire unless actually threatened (i.e. they have weapons that can do serious damage to the tank), and try to show that we have advanced weapons we're willing to use, but only against our enemies.

Better yet, assemble some sort of civilian news team to make coverage about us pancaking the raiders, and use that coverage (not broadcast openly of course, but just to the village) as proof of our intentions.

Settle down, decide on what to do with Squad B first. :P

Send the tank after the raiders, give them the option to join as subcitizens, leave the region, or fight, and lose...

As subcitizens they would be expected to work in low-security fields for six months without violent incidents. They would then be reviewed for membership as full citizens.

As for the village, try to leave messages to arrange an unarmed meeting. Leave letters, Carve a message into some ruins, leave rocks in morse-code formation, whatever. See if we can establish trade, we will offer small quantities(compared to our surplus) of food.

This.  Try to intimidate them with the thaumatank by firing a warning shot, so they can see how powerful it is.

Oh, right, the Thaumatak.

Two important things about that:
1) You need to decide a crew of 1-3, which will give it bonuses/special effects/gravy. Unless you put all Recruits, which gives it debuffs.
2) It can arrive the same day because the Thaumatank moves rather fast.

Also, you still need to determine the nature of your research for the week.

Time for me to sleep.

I say Superior Soldiers for our research, and a crew of three elites for the Thaumatank.

Styles are probably something you'll do better to hold off with until later. While some (like Superior Soldiers) do give bonuses to your current troops, they're largely going to open up whole new troop trees to you. I won't say you can't, but things will likely be easier... and the Unit List will be less cluttered... if you don't research that yet.

Well, we should get a basic framework hammered out at least. That'll make sure that it work with the Magitech too.

To explain, adding the Trait STYLE: Superior Soldiers to your Magitech units will increase the rate of experience gain, add some scaling to their stats (Attack and Defense, mostly, with a few types gaining Mobility), and give them morale increases and morale defense increases.

Exceeeeept:
Magitech's lack of inherent morale defense/boosts in their fighters generally comes from almost all of their special units boosting morale
The level-scaling bonuses are going to give you like one point to these stats.

Ah, Would Superior Equipment act as a multiplier for the Magitech though?
