Choosing Baron based on more than name?
« on: September 01, 2011, 04:31:41 am »

Ugh I just escaped out of the menu where I pick the recommendation for barony.  I had chose the option to join, but I hit escape on the second menu because I wanted to go and look at my dwarve's preferences.  Will the make the offer again?

I think he'll make the offer again next meeting, but don't take my word on it.
You should note down the name of the dwarf you think is fit for royalty, it's a pain that the list only shows you the names rather then important information.

Incase you're asked again,  check your lists of Dwarves for a Dwarf who loves pig tail cloth and socks - trust me, they are the best!

Dwarven Science: We do what we must, because, we're bored.

Every few miles, [the dwarves] stop the cart.  One of the dwarfs (sic) gets off, digs a hole down below the dirt layers, licks the bedrock, and then they know exactly where they are.  It's called GPS: Geological Piquancy Sampling.

yeah, you can't check their profiles from the diplomacy windows.
it's actually very frustrating, because if you don't pick the baron, you'll have to see this window on the next year, and when the liason offers you to appoint a baron, he does not offer the trade agreement.
So, every year spent appointing a baron is a year without import agreement, which sucks.
You should take a look at your dwarves' profiles in dwarf therapist and pick a baron asap.

The "become a barony" thing always comes as a little bit of a surprise to me when it happens. Usually, after declining the first time, I search through my dwarfs and pick one with preferences for things that I make a lot of in my fort and rename their custom profession as "Future Baron". Saves a lot of trouble next year when you can't quite remember which dwarf you decided on.

or maybe Valve goes out of business because they invested too heavily in something which then fails - like, say, human civilization.
Alternatively, initiate strife to refuse additional baked goods, and then abscond.

My baroness is a bitch. Jabberer leather! All the time! Why can't you be happy with your bloody artifact green glass cabinet?! Why can't you be cool like my mayor? Ask for steel short swords and shields!

I try to inspect all my dwarves when they arrive, so I can assign them jobs etc appropriate for their preferences (e.g. a herbalist with preference for "steel" and "battleaxes" gets weaponsmithing turned on).

If I find someone who would be a good canditate for a particular noble role, I'll give them a nickname to indicate that.  Then, when it comes to actually choosing a noble, it is easy to find the relevant dwarf.
E.g. a weak, compassionate dwarf would make a good sheriff, while a dwarf who likes copper and hammers would make a good baron, assuming you have a plentiful supply of copper.

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.
