Getting Dorfs to spar...
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:03:11 pm »

How can you do this?

I have small 3-4 man squads, set to train (2) year-round. They all share a barracks. They do Individual Combat drills al the time, but never spar.

Are your soldiers in Military mode or Civilian mode? If the latter, make sure you've actually ordered them to train - civilians will never do anything other than individual combat drills and archery practice.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Also with my experience with military I find that they don't spar all the time is it just kinda random when they do it. You can tell because they will be running around in the barracks.

Sure, but they should be doing group trainings sometimes too.  If they're not, I'm guessing their squad isn't Active and set to train.

Just wait a sec.

It sounds like you've managed to get your guys to train as active troops. I thought that was impossible. The wiki seems to imply itr is possible, but does not tell me exactly which buttons I need to press to make this happen.

So how the hell do I get my dorfs to train while they're active-duty?

?
It's not a mystery.

1. Set them to train at a minimum squad size of <= The number of dorfs in the squad.
2. Assign them to a barracks.
3. Set them to "active" (s -> (a,b,c,whatever the squad's letter is) -> t)

That's it. I embark with two military dwarves, and the first thing my Mason makes is a weapon rack. They don't usually spar for the first couple of months, but eventually they get into it, and I usually have them both at legendary by some point in the second year. I tend to find that teams of two are ideal: with a team of three, usually two of them spar and the third one just hangs around like an idiot. Two teams of three is better organized as three teams of two.

This feels like such a mystery. I swear I've been doing most of these things, and my dorfs get nowhere. Bleh.

It's the only way to do it.

Exactly where on the wiki is this implied but not clearly stated?

1. Set them to train at a minimum squad size of <= The number of dorfs in the squad.
Why would you want to set it below the size of the squad? Do you still intend for your soldiers to perform random civilian duties?

Until I read this thread I didn't know you could have active troops that weren't a) patrolling, b) killing something, or c) stationed. I assumed the technically non-active guys doing individual combat drills with their civilian professions were the people you meant when you said "active troops." All the wiki says it that it's possible to have active troops train, and that those troops can spar. It does not say how you get them to be active.

And there's apparently more to it then simply selecting the squad in the "s" menu, and selecting "t," because I did that and the only active troop I have is a recruit whose in the hospital. Hopefully I just have to wait a few months for them to notice they're active duty.

The easy way to put squads on duty is to go into the [m]ilitary page and assign each squad to the "Active/Training" alert state.

With my military, I ust throw the poor sods in, S for squads, T for training. They handle the rest. They spar like crazy. It might only be 2 at a time because I have full squads of 10, but damn it's effective, and they do it alot. And the ones who aren't sparring are either watching, pr practicing with their own weapons.

To account for sleeping and partying and such. I've tried having 10-dwarf squads set to train at 10 minimum before: they almost never train. When they finally do get a session going, it only lasts for a couple a seconds before one of them has to go sleep. Having 10 Dwarves coordinate their schedules effectively is impossible.

As stated, I usually stick with pairs. Two dwarves are the most likely to spend the maximum amount of time training.

The problem you're seeing is unrelated - as I posted in another thread, I've got one fortress with a squad of 8 Swordsdwarves where 2 are sleeping, 3 are doing a demonstration, and 3 are sparring, and that squad is set to "Train, 10 minimum"; I've got a few other full squads with the same settings and they also work fine.

Go to [m]ilitary->[a]lerts and set the squad from Inactive to Active and they should turn to military mode.
