Remember, the spikes are part of the plates. Each armor cell is attached to a single spiked plate.

Hmmm, moblie interlocking plates of armour would probably be a bit silly, and heavy...

They don't interlock, each is tethered to the cell's surface directly. They are light and flexible, ie. you still bulge out between the plates and move them around to some degree.

Yes, I was saying that it would be silly to develop them, probably.

Turn 26

Unfortunately, the worm's vision was nearly as bad as yours. 'Course, you could tell that from the fact that its eyes were nearly invisible. Being a burrowing creatures, it must have used its spines to detect pressure changes in the water around them. Scrapping that bit of code, you peruse the other genes, purging those that would be redundant for your use. You squirrel away several of the structural ones- right now, they would probably only complicate your structure. The spikes are retrofitted with toxin channels for delivery of enzymatic poison to the outside through contact with your armor; good thing they are attached to living cells- it lets them heal when injured or be altered without having to dispose of them. Of course, it makes them more vulnerable, but that's the price you pay.

Around you, it is still quite dark. However, you light up at the thoughts of having more thought power! Light... there are many possibilities. Of course, you can't gather any from your environment, but you're sure that there is some way to incorporate it into your structure. Then, of course, there's projectiles.

Wow, how convenient, this protein emits light when energy is applied to it...

Dude, there's currently an epic microscopic battle of intergalactic proportions going on in your mouth, your food, your house, your hands... Inside of you, man.

Creepy yet oddly awesome to consider.

Mmmmm. I can taste the bloodshed. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Edit 1: Except the thing to consider is that Vitascinti spp. is almost visible to the naked eye.

Edit 2: Can you be a species without a method of reproduction? You're too complex to split.

The traditional definition of species is not universally viable, I wouldn't worry about our taxonomic status...

Well, to exist as an organism you need a method of reproduction somehow... :P

So... If we are not an organism, what are we? An elemental force? A universal law? The inevitable? I don't think I want to be an organism...

We are organic and living therefore we are an organism, but we're not a very good one if we're the sole of our kind and can't reproduce. That goes against the point of evolving in the first place; Eat, evolve, expand. We've absorbed, we've evolved, but we haven't yet determined a method of expanding ourselves, either via asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction, spores, cell splitting, or some such. Someone said we're too large/complex a cell to split (who said so? :P), so that means we're stuck with the cellular equivalent of cloning, animal-like conception, or plant-like budding.
