P.S.
I do not believe that it has been stated anywhere that we are carbon-based. Let's be sodium-based, it'll be Fun!

youve got a choice of carbon or silicon, sodium dosent have the ability to be the basis for life. :P the element cant form as complex bonds as carbon or silicon.

Pretty sure it comes down to silicon or carbon. Other things simply wouldn't hold together/be complex enough. Carbon is still superior to silicon for complexity and strength though.

It all depends on complexity of bonds and ability to be inert. carbon and silicon -carbon is superior because it is more inert, ie more stable- are the only two practicle options, trust me on this.

"Boron's chemistry is possibly even more variable than that of carbon, since it has the ability to form polyhedral clusters and three-center two-electron bonds. Boranes are dangerously explosive in Earth's atmosphere, but would be more stable in a reducing environment. However, boron's low cosmic abundance makes it less likely as a base for life than carbon."

We could be... the Chosen One.

Hey, I'm all for Boron or Silicon. Carbon? Bah. I thought the point of Fantasy was to delve into unexplored worlds and imagine things beyond the scope of mortal man ;)

When we speak about complexity in this context, are we referring to how complex a cell or organism can be while still maintaining structural integrity? Does this have any outstanding implications for the complexity of a creature's neurological network/brain..?

-sighs-

we are carbon based life forms because a) DNA is based on a carbon suger chain backbone b) we store our energy in carbon based sugers c) our cell membranes are made out of polymer fats requireing carbon d) our proteins require carbon as the basics for their amino acid components and much more.

The reason is: carbon has 4 bonds. it is relativly inert so it wont react with any stray element or compound that comes its way and therefor makes a stable and reliable basic element to construct complex molecules out of.

Other elements could be used, if you dont mind a near constant basis of DNA degration and random reactions that could kill the cell, and thats the unstable ones, if you have something like silicon youll be sacraficing ease of binding things together for more stability, but this will drasticaly slow you down.

Yes, you could have other elements, but i seriously recomend against it if its not carbon or silicon.
