Photosynthesis. Doesn't matter how we get it - it's a safe and reliable fallback, should we ever encounter scarce food resources or need to stay motionless for long periods.

Better eyes and/or sonar would be nice, but not too essential, I think.

I suppose you could just have dormant backup chloroplasts.

There are a kind of flatworm that scavenges chloroplasts and in doing so requires little to no food. :P
It's doable up to a size much bigger than we are now, so that would be an EXTREMELY viable way of feeding.

infrared vision and redlight lure + infrared communication
we're gonna lay a spore soon, aren't we?

chloroplasts can go to hell for all i care.

We need light to see, learn to make light...

Screw light-based vision, we should go with sonar.

Just build a highly sensitive bladder to detect nearby gravitational influences...

Y'know, that might be an even better idea. That, or seeing if we can evolve a natural version of LIDAR.

can we begin with perceiving simple electromagnetic radiation of medium energy, also know as infrared/visible light?

In other words can we see? Already done, or do you mean expanding the spectrum of wavelengths we can observe?

Wow, that's actually really friggin' awesome looking.
That is brilliant.
That is hilarious, Ashton. I love it.
OMG yes!!!  Thank you!!!

Why electromagnetic vision? That's so trite and boring...

Well, as I understand it, getting functional gamma vision would be pretty much impossible, but if we had it, and a gamma lamp to go with it, we could just irradiate everything to death...

I have been trying to make torpedoes since, like, foreva... We already have the casing(spikes), warhead(enzymes and injector), and propulsion(flagella). What we need is a guidance system. Developing light emission and using it to high-light a target in a manner that will attract our projectile would be a controllable method that shouldn't require much complexity from the projectile itself. We could also use some more refinement in our ability to voluntarily sever our spikes without harming ourselves...

I believe edio said to BOLD your ideas, and I believe I suggested that we all should list the pros/cons. (options are optional)

Regarding your idea for torpedos I think we can blindly propel them (We still need a control system however) at medium distance / slow moving targets for now, much more accurate than the food sacs we throw them in either way.

oh yay torpedos!

a big cell filled with enzymes, with flagella and some chemicals receptor for guidance.
