That's called a steam cell. What you're suggesting is essential: "give all our cells the ability to revert back to something like an embryonic steam cell!"

You already have an extremely high ability for adaptation, considering how you're able to adapt faster than most other organisms and without breeding. You are essentially stem cells already.

and your "ultimate cell" is ultimate just because it can convert into specialized cells...
look, who, between sponges and humans, are teh best? because sponge is full stem cells, and human full specialized cells (stem cells being "repair specialists").
Specialization is good.

These cells would have nothing to do with stems...

I am thinking of a clear cell with a laser emitter, a simple visual receiver, probably some sort of bladder to let the cell expand or contract to facilitate the creature's motion, a protein gel that can readily be crystallised or processed into complicated compounds, and some sort of clear, rigid boundary that can cope with rapid expansion and pressure, perhaps a box with ruffles at the edges or somethign highly elastic that is compelled to form a prefect sphere. Full crystallisation would probably be one-way, making the internal frame-work an external hard-covering dead, but they could still be cannibalised by nearby living cells and could act as a conduit for lasers, maybe the 'brain' would be dead, just a mass of crystal that reflects optical beams around endlessly with an occasional input or output from the portions of the corspe that continue to metabolise...

I suppose I could just end this here and now, as you achieve organic perfection.

... In another universe, the struggle to adapt continues!

having perfect cells is costly, and losing one in the exercice of one risky function is COSTLY. it is way better to have several cells, each one specialized in one task. It does not cost any more energy, because each cell is smaller, and the "perfect" one expense an awfully lot of energy for each function it has. Plus, it is easier to get rid of an useless cell type than an useless part of "perfect cell".

Sigh.

We are already multicellular. And the point of this forum game is to continue to evolve and adapt, rather than simply reaching perfection right this moment.

also, perfection is relative. Goal of this game is to attain relative, local perfection. One of the possible perfections for this very spot of space and time, from a given opinion.

We were asking to eat those worm part and hide in the hole for ambush, aren't we?

Turn 27

You slowly pull the worm over to its burrow, following the chemical trail that led you there in the first place. Using your manipulators, you drag yourself deeper into the worm's tunnel until you decide that nothing from the outside should be able to see you. You settle into a small nook in the wall and begin to eat the worm. After you've eaten your fill, you fall into a restful state as your cells divide and grow. After several repetitions of this process, you have devoured the whole worm and more than doubled in size. Some of the nutrients go towards developing a small chamber in the lining of your digestive cavity. Within, you begin to develop a tough spore filled with energy and protein, which you hope will be able to survive and eventually grow into another of your kind.

You know... if we were too remove the stingers from about half the tentacles and replace them with suction cups we would probably be able to manipulate our world in a much cooler way, we could even use them as legs and move towards the light, breaking the surface of the water and making it to dry land  :D

How about adding suction to half of the tentacles only? I like the idea of a Cthulhu'esque creature evolving from primordial waters and one day become the overlords of the planet, before being beaten back into the sea. One day, we shall rise and conquer the Earth from the grasp of young, foolish humanity... As is our rightful place.
