Well, indirectly, sure, but we already knew that. Public servants gotta buy their condoms somewhere, and their paychecks ARE derived from tax dollars in some measure. If you mean directly, in any way that would make sense to consider as "tax dollars"? I doubt police officers are allowed to charge purchases they make (even while on-duty) to the department unless they can prove that it was directly relevant to doing their job, which probably means bureaucratic hell if you buy anything that isn't on a pre-approved list, at best. I could be wrong on that, but I'd expect that any contraceptives were purchased privately.

Also, I really hope it was consensual. The power dynamic here makes me worry, but hopefully it's just my overly pessimistic mind overreacting.

No really, the news report says this:
"The officer was awarded police officer of the year in the past and had previously served on former governor Bill Richardson's security detail."

"This officer is the same arresting officer in the high profile Daniel Martinez escape and rape case."
(The guy hid a paperclip somewhere and used it to pick the lock on the handcuffs, escaped from the police station and seems to have carjacked/raped some poor woman).

Even more incredible:
"The Santa Fe sheriff Robert Garcia says he will not be pressing criminal charges because the incident occurred "in the middle of nowhere."

Ok, granted, jurisdiction might be a pain but.... I don't even know what to say about this. Does the fact that they aren't pressing charges against the officer mean it was consensual? Or, is this not a final decision not to press charges and thus subject to change?

Also, how is there a security camera if it is in the middle of nowhere? That'd be my first question to this sherif about not pressing charges.

The "not pressing charges" thing is probably referring to public indecency laws. AFAIK it's against the law to have sex in a public place. Those laws are lax when not in a place where people will likely see, like the woods or other "in the middle of nowhere" places.

Though yeah, if there's a security camera...
