Freezing/Encasing Creatures/Items Recovery
« on: August 31, 2011, 05:02:29 pm »

I've been getting some mixed messages on this (and I know it used to be true, and then it wasn't and so forth) but when creatures are frozen in ice is it possible to get some of their stuff back by digging out the tile? What about being encased in obsidian?

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - A fun zombie survival rougelike that I'm dev-ing for.

When i dug out my moat on one fortress after a couple of goblins corpses filled it all that was there was ice. Only ice.(I had dug it out after the river froze.) While it had been filled with giant spider silk socks and clothing from the lobbed off limbs of goblins nothing remained. Same with dwarves frozen in ice the corpse disappears completely and you are required to make a memorial

Cool, now all that's left to find out is how encasing in obsidian reacts.

I hope in the future encasing in ice will preserve the items possibly even keep a creature alive inside cryogenically frozen (Unrealistic but alot of fun... Imagine a Animal Cryolabs

I think encasing in obsidian would destroy everything inside... because wouldn't the lava destroy the items? Although i have heard of dwarves who survived being encased in obsidian.

According to the main bug report on this issue, assigning the items to be dumped from the stocks screen causes them to reappear.

If your bookkeeping precision is high enough that hitting tab on the stocks screen lists the individual items for that category and the items don't appear in the stocks list, then they're truly gone, and can't be recovered.

I have never experienced this myself, but I read somewhere (either here or the wiki) that magma-proof items that get encased in obsidian will come back if you mine out the obsidian.
