Question about cave adaptation.
« on: August 31, 2011, 11:56:58 am »

So, my dwarves have been steadily growing adapted to darkness. This is kind of bogus, because I like to keep the outside of my fort pretty, and they all have to march out there to dump the rubbish the dead gobbos leave behind. It makes them all pretty ticked off.

So, if I build a building aboveground, with a roof and walls and all to keep out the fliers, and designate the meeting area there, will that revert their cave adaptation?

Yeah though there will be a bunch of vomit there at the beginning. You don't necessarily have to build aboveground though. Any spaces that have ever been revealed to the light of day will help to prevent cave adaptation, so if you want you can just remove the ceiling from the top levels of your fort and then re-roof over it to get the same effect. Lots of people actually do this with their main stairways by just channeling out the stairway and then rebuilding it with constructions.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I tend to like to put my trade depots outside for this reason, among others (convenience, amusement).  Anyone likely to haul anything -- and, thus, to worry about cave adaptation -- will be one of the masses bringing items to and from the depot 2-3 times per year.  They get mildly irritated, but they've stayed vomit-free.

I also will sometimes do observation decks so that my guys can enjoy the view of goblins being slaughtered.  A nice room built above the fortress proper into the sky, with lots of windows and maybe a few exotic animals in cages for happy thoughts, set as a meeting room.  This is a bit more comprehensive than the depot but does require idling to work.  If your fortress is very efficient, this would be the better option.

It's not that your dwarves are becoming cave adapted, it's that they're getting rid of that nasty sky adaptation the filthy surface dwarves from the mountainhomes have 8)

But Roadhouse is a true masterpiece. Seriously.
