Digging 1x1 pit
« on: August 30, 2011, 09:14:13 pm »

How do I dig a 1x1 pit? I only seem to be able to dig a 'channel' which dwarves and other things can just walk into and out of. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Dig a tunnel underground.  Wall off a 1x1 space at the end of the tunnel.  Channel out the ground over that 1x1 space.

Use "dig up ramp" on the floor below. Hopefully you're not digging too far, and your miner wont go asleep/decide he's too hungry or thirsty to finish the work. Since he will be stuck down there until he's done, I mean. If the pit is supposed to be 1x1x1, then you can use channel and then use DFhack to remove the upramp, and you'll have a pit with vertical walls.

ramp down, then two more squares so itīs tunnel-tunnel-ramp. Channel from above so the left tunnel is breached from above. Build a wall in the middle, making sure your mason isnīt trapped. Floor the original ramp from above. The result should be something like this, surface and the Z-level below on different lines:

Open space - natural floor - constructed floor
Empty square - constructed wall - ramp without access to surface

I usually go at least 2 wide.  Stairs on one side, pit on the other.  After I'm done digging, wall over the top stairs
