Those who deserve love the least are those who need it the most.

*shrug*
Agreed. Have you hugged your local banker or politician today?

Anyway, I am not entirely sure what the topic of discussion at this point is? It seems people are arguing about the question of other people should be allowed to show sympathy towards someone who made what I at this point shall call a grave mistake? There seems to be very little convincing going on and a lot of meta-discussion to boot, so to me it seems like you are arguing about if other people should be sympathetic in this case without actually caring about what the people in question think about that?

Feh. I don't know about whether he deserves sympathy or no. I know that I can try to offer it, and that this is likely the most effective way to convince him to enter therapy. As long as we agree that trying to get that to happen is optimal, I don't have too much to argue about, but I don't care so much about what's deserved as I do about what will actually get shit done.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I would think that “deserving” is rather a matter of personal opinion, so, if I be correct in thinking such, we can abandon all hope of agreeing about who deserves what.

I would argue that he needs love, understanding and support from people trying to help him in real life. On the internet, sure, I'm not opposed to it, I just don't really think it's worthwhile. Not in this case.

Agreed. Have you hugged your local banker or politician today?

Your passive-aggressiveness is really starting to get to me, Virex.

It is preferable to aggressive aggressiveness though.

You are mistaken. He is employing irony, but he is not being “passive-aggressive”.

He doesn't agree, and is attempting to subtly make me look like a hypocrite, rather than saying "What, do you think this extends to those bankers and politicians you hate so much as well?"

I like people to be open about things.  It makes my life a hell of a lot easier.

What subtlety? It is rather obvious irony. In fact, the only way irony works is if it is clearly irony. He is not subtly making you look like anything. “Passive-aggressiveness” is not at all what he is doing.

Let me state up front that it was not my intent to make you look bad and I'll be the second to admit I'm too fond of indirect references and similar uninformative speech patterns. So take this as an explanation rather than a justification if you would.
I didn't know you hated bankers with a passion? I was just making a stab at the general tendency of most columnists and others with influential opinions to paint the "economic elite" as "the people least deserving of love" (simply an observational statement, not saying I or anyone here agrees or disagrees with that stance). I guess I should add more disclaimers to my post.

Though in a sense I was being passive-aggressive (if you're willing to stretch it's definition), as I was also trying to point out that such a saying is open to more interpretations than I have microvilli, but I expected that to be self-evident enough to not be a problem. In other words, of course I agree with the statement, since one'd be hard-pressed to find no interpretation she can agree with.

Had I the opportunity, and if I thought hugs would contribute to changing their mindset in such a way as to reduce their tendency to commit acts I consider selfish, short-sighted, and ultimately destructive, I would hug them, yes. To be even more extreme, if hugs would have prevented the Holocaust and eventually reversed the systemic hatred so central to Nazism, yes, I would have hugged Hitler's brains out, even after the Nuremberg Laws and similar asshattery.

And if I think sympathy here is likely to improve the odds of the OP acting on advice to go see a therapist, then I will display sympathy.

With some people, though, showing sympathy is like trying to cure a vampire’s vamprism by offering your blood. I know their kind.

Holy shit. I'm no cool guy by any means, but holy shit.
Threatening to kill the woman who MADE YOU because some kids call you out over Xbox Live, you have to be the biggest, excuse my language, cunt/loser in the world. Some kids laugh at you, and judging by these actions I can only assume that you had it coming, you get pissed. That in its own is stupid, getting teased by some people you'll never meet and getting mad at them makes you can idiot in its own, but then you proceed to yell at someone. Not just someone, but your mom. And you threaten to stab her with a kitchen knife (A.K.A. A DEATH THREAT)...
If you have ANY bit of sanity in that shit for brains little head of yours, you need to head on over to the nearest asylum, and have the nice men in the green uniforms take care of you.
By the way, don't stab a human being because I said this. Dick face.
