Auto-upgrading weapons?

I've made some training weapons to get my dwarves started before I got my metal industry up and running. (This has been succesful btw, half of 'em are legendary spear dwarves). I have now got the stage where iron weapons are being crafted, will dwarfs drop their crappy wooden spears when metal ones come available, or is there something else I have to do?

"training spears" and "spears" are considered different weapons, so no, they will not upgrade.
You have to assign them new uniforms.

So if I equip to 'spears' in the equipment tab, theyll change to the metal ones?

can't you set what kind of weapon material they'll go for in the military screen? I recall being able to do that for armour, at least

You got them to legendary before making metal weapons? My dwarves are barely 'great' and I've had metal weapons for 5 years. Huh.

But anyways, yes they should upgrade as long as you don't specifically tell them to use training spears. Dwarves should [SHOULD] pick up the best available weapon, and metal of any sort trumps wood by miles. If you want, go into your stocks and simply forbid all the wooden spears, and then they should drop their wooden ones and pick up metal ones. Assuming they don't do it automatically for whatever reason.

Actually the dwarves will swap weapons/armor for more expensive ones. So if make a adamantom mace(for some odd reason) a dwarf will swap his copper mace for that thing, instead of the nice iron one you wanted him to use. A more expensive weapon does not sometimes mean more effective

Really? Well... hm. I've never equipped my soldiers with specific weapons, just told them to grab whatever they felt like. Then again I normally hit iron and maybe steel before I either

a) fail gloriously
or
b) get so defensively that I can survive anything with a self-sufficient fortress.

I may have to start assigning specific weapons.

Huh... this is a littlçe off topic, your question has been answered already anyway, but do skills go up faster while training with actual training weapons instead of proper weapons? I had my dwarves equipped with metal weapons from the beginning with a intensive training schedule and none of em is even close to legendary yet, even after several ambushes/sieges.

oh, nvm, I never tried making danger rooms because it's kinda exploity, but I might start doing so because actual training is ridiculously slow, to the point of being almost completely pointless if it wasn't for skill degradation, which is a stupid feature anyway.

Yep. Beware weapon decorations, they increase value.

I usually equip them with training weapons and send them against unarmed (but still armored) goblins.
They tend to reach the legendary after like 3 or 4 per person.

I wouldn't call them exploity, because to me it kinda makes sense. It's a bit like the 'danger room' they have in Kung Fu Panda. If I can explain it, I don't mind using it.

It is probably game breaking though.

I agree. The CONCEPT makes total sense. However, have you seen how FAST they train them? It's ludicrous. That's like saying if I dodge a spear for 10 minutes straight, I'll be the greatest fighter on tge face of the planet. I would use  them if they were MUCH slower, maybe just slightly faster than regular training. Probably not even that much, since an automated spear is much more easy to gauge where it's gonna strike compared to completely unpredictable living opponent.
