I was just thinking: If that incestuous, drunkard, dirty old man Noah was the best Gomorrah had to offer....

I recall one point where I actually laughed out loud while reading the Bible. Basically, Jesus walked up to a fig tree, and it didn't have fruit on it at the time, so he cursed it.

God hates figs?

Pretty sure that you just won the game, with that.  Also quoting from TVTropes:

"Exodus 4:24-26. God attacks and tries to kill Moses prompting Moses's wife to circumcise Moses's son and throws the foreskin at Moses's feet. This act makes God let Moses go. This moment comes out of nowhere and is never mentioned again. "

As I understand it, calling him incestuous is pushing it a bit. The way I understand it is that his daughters got him to drink until he was to hammered to recognize them, then had their way with him. Yes, it was incestuous sex, but it wasn't due to any incestous inclinations of him.

The best one is where some children call a prophet an old baldy, and so he sends bears to murder them all. It's at 2 Kings 2:23-24  :D

I mean, damn, some guys are a bit oversensitive about being bald, but seriously? 3 and a half dozen dead children is a bit overkill, if you'll excuse the pun. :P

Those are from the old testament, which contians a lot more dubious stuff then the new one. Although christians use a lot of stuff from the old testament, a lot of it is overruled by stuff from the new testament.

Although the new testament is better in content than the old, it still has its share of the iffy stuff. Consider, for example, 1 Timothy 2:11-15:
Quote from: 1 Timothy 2:11-15
11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
In short, all christian women should do is listen to their husband and have lots of children

Sorry, turtle.  Some things in the bible are...  Odd indeed.  I guess that deserves it's own thread, dunno.

This blog post puts the mistranslation of this verse into context.

Yeah we should all shut up so Turtle doesn't get offended.

I've been told I am an opium dealer to the masses. I've been told the book I've tried to build a life around is fiction. I've been called a christnazi. I've been compared to a cult member. My beliefs have been compared to addiction. The partial Satanist in this thread has had more respect for my beliefs than many of the Atheists who have popped up. It's been like this pretty much from the start. For the majority of this thread I've said nothing because this is not a debate on the legitimacy of my beliefs, but I would be lying if I said with all honesty that this thread wasn't actively hostile -- or at the very least entirely patronizing -- to what I believe. I've simply decided to reply with education rather than argument.

That's not to say I haven't enjoyed the thread, but I feel that dismissing Turtle's concerns in this way would be rather dishonest. You're certainly allowed to express your opinions, but with that statement you're degrading him, and saying that he should not be able to express his own opinions because yours and others are more important. If that is what you meant, that's cool. That's just one more offensive thing. I just didn't know if you were aware.

I feel like that was a fitting end to the thread.  Sorry for the comments that got out of hand.  I intended the thread to be "help me deal with recent developments", that's all.
