Can dwarves use bows?
« on: August 28, 2011, 05:04:42 pm »

so, can I use it as a weapon, or should I just stick it in a weapon trap and put it in the middle of a room?

I'm relatively sure they can, but you're going to need to import arrows.  :-\

Dwarves can also smack their enemies with bows. It's about as effective as you'd expect.

Weapon trap bows need arrows as well. :(

Give that bow to your captain of the guard!
also, my forts usually end up having craptons of arrows brought by savaged elven caravans and goblin sieges. Just don't melt them.

dwarves can just barely use crossbows as anything other than a odd shaped mace, asking them to figure out this weird "bow" contraption is probably too much.

Only if you need them to work. It's perfectly valid to put a bow into a weapon trap built in a common area so everyone can see it, and then forbid the trap and bow to prevent "can't load weapon trap" spam messages. I do this with all relatively poor artifact weapons (bone, frex.)

Goblins?  My invaders carry bolts.  However, humans and elves both trade arrows, so I just buy them up.  I'm never short of trade goods anyway and I keep hoping to train up an amazing bowdwarf someday.

A word of warning, however: place your bowdwarf in a separate squad from your marksdwarves. Otherwise, your bowdwarf is liable to pick up bolts by mistake, and your marksdwarves are likely to pick up arrows by mistake. Assign the appropriate type of ammo to each squad so they don't get confused.

I figured this out the hard way. I still can't get most of them to drop the bolts.... no matter, they'll die eventually.

I've noticed that Bowdorfs with enough training are far superior to Marksdorfs with the same experience level. I have no idea why, possibly other factors involved. As far as I can tell, bows are nice~ And there are plenty of goblinite arrows laying around, and elvenite arrows for training :)
