I am a bit confused by why you feel the need to let the sieges drag on.  Surely one of your abilities needs fear no hordes!

The fights tire me. Mostly, because while they are supposedly against greater forces, our forces just waltz through them. The next update has dozens of fullstack battles, that show absolutely NOTHING new, and thus i blitzed through almost a decade already, with nothing exciting to show..

Except maybe this.
Note that I am the attacker.

Also note, that i will reuse the image for the next update tittle.
Lastly, Sassanid generals on VH are just fucking ridiculous. I had my carriage balista's wipe out the bodyguards till there were only 24 left, and..
These 24 bodyguards killed 495 of my troops.

It's easier than it looks.

First of all, i have positioned my infantry at the very beginning (before the battle) in the wide-spread formation, and then grouped them. So that reforming the entire line is as easy as reforming a single unit.
Horde spearmen can not switch formation, they have the same disorganized-mob formation as peasants, thus we can easily outflank a much bigger force. This time there were more of us anyway (infantry-wise, per wave)
AI always puts the horse archers on the flanks, with two wide-spread cavalry you can encircle them in no time.
Roman heavy infantry is much stronger than the horde infantry. On VH they are still stronger than the spearhorde.
Entire line of heavy infantry tossing javelins all at once, and then charging, is extremely effective, especially against enemies with crap armor. They are wavering even before they meet in swordfight.

As the infantry and archers run towards the enemy to start volleys, i focused on cavalry. It didn't take too long.
Afterwards all i had to do is tell all infantry to attack some backwater target in the center, and redirect 2 or 3 units per flank to different ones.

Once the enemies were wiped out, all i had to do is press "1", right click with the mouse on the ground and shuffle it around to form a stable front against the next wave.
And so i could focus on cavalry again.

To quickly move to a unit, doubleclick on its portrait.
To quickly move to a spot on the battlefield, doubleclick on the terrain.

Some things i have to leave to fate, dice roll or whatever you wish to call it. Since one can not see the entire battlefield the entire time, minimizing the risks and putting troops that will surely win against their immediate foes allows you to pay attention to other places.
Our heavy infantry > spearhorde, thus i didn't even need to watch the line.

Watching the portraits and minimap is easier and faster.

It was unlikely that my line would break (very unlikely, as neither spearhorde nor arrows can deal significant damage to heavy infantry)
and impossible to get encircled by enemy infantry (we are wider, remember?)
Thus it once again, as always against hordes, came down to horse archers. And our cavalry has a degree in wiping horse archers by now.

I will toss some more explanatory commentary in the following updates, as there is not much left to do. Except for Huns, Roxolans, Burgundii and Sassanids, there is nothing.
Maybe Slavs, if we prolong the campaign.

I would like to see a detailed lesson on your killing of missile cavalry, I just end up sicking some heavy cavalry and letting them ride off into the sunset.

I am surprised to see that you keep using the preventores.  I was of the impression that they were a waste of money and army slots compared to regular troops.  The only time they've ever won me a battle was in multiplayer, and that was only because they made my opponent panic and screw up, not because of they were effective in combat.  What do they do that regular troops can't do?

I was hoping that they would allow for some neat encircling, and once or twice enemies have passed them heading for my main line, only to be charged from behind by the "commando" troops.
They are however too few of zem in the unit, and their power is limited, and so i don't plan on building any more.

In short : We keep using them, because we have built them already, and disbanding is bad.

Well, I suppose you can always do the other kind of encircling.  As one army marches across persia from the west, general big balls and friends come storming in from the north to cause havoc!
